POUGHKEEPSIE, NY- The Hartwick women' water polo team continued play at the Marist Invite and split their two morning matches against divisional opponents. The Hawks fell to #9 Michigan 10-9 in overtime in the first game and defeated Notre Dame College 18-10 in the second game. 'Wick is now 16-5 overall and 3-3 in the CWPA Western Division.
Against the Wolverines,
Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) scored three goals to lead the Hawks.
Lisa Bass (Montreal Quebec),
Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand), and
Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) all had two scores each.
Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) had eight saves in goal.
Michigan scored first to take the early 1-0 lead. Hartwick would tie it up and then take the lead on Kosich's first score of the game. The Wolverines scored to make it a one-goal Hartwick lead but Freeborn's goal with 14 seconds left in the first quarter increased the Hawks' lead to 4-2.
Hartwick would still lead by two scores, 6-4, at halftime. Michigan would score once in the third quarter to make it 6-5 Hartwick.
Michigan would tie the game at 6-all at 5:48 of the fourth quarter but the Hawks would quickly regain the lead on Freeborn's second goal of the game at 4:24. Hartwick was poised to hold on for the victory but Michigan's Lauren Thatcher scored the equalizer with just 11 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, goals by Thatcher and Kelsey Nolan put Michigan up 9-7. Martinez would net her second goal of the game in the second overtime with 1:01 left. Nolan would score again for Michigan to put them back up by two goals until Kosich's goal with 16 seconds left would narrow the deficit to just one score. That would be as close as Hartwick would get as Michigan held on for the win.
Against Notre Dame,
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) scored three times to lead the Hawks.
Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan),
Sami Capparelli (Miami FL),
Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa),
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), and
Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand) all had two scores apiece.
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa),
Kristen Wagner (Orange CA),
Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI),
Lyndsy Knapp (Soquel, CA),
and
Sara Herlich (Shrewsbury, MA) all had one goal.
Guia Carlini (Camogli, Italy) got the start in goal and had five saves.
The Falcons took the early 1-0 lead of the contest before Tonkin scored to knot it up at 1-1.
Jemma Dendy Young gave Hartwick the lead just 30 seconds later and her sister, Lara, would increase the Hawk lead to 3-1 soon after. After Notre Dame tacked on a goal, Hartwick would score twice more to go up 5-2 after one quarter of play.
Four straight 'Wick goals increased the Hawk lead to 9-2 at 6:26 of the second quarter. The Falcons would narrow the deficit slightly with two scores but Hartwick still led 9-4 at halftime.
Five more Hartwick scores gave 'Wick the 14-4 lead with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter. The Falcons would get as close as seven goals in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks were too much as they would eventually come away with the victory.
