BAKERSFIELD, CA- The Hartwick women's water polo team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay and Redlands on the second day of the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Cal State Bakersfield.
The Hawks defeated Redlands 16-5 in the first game.
Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and
Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec) led Hartwick with three goals each.
Shannon Leonard (Ponte Claire, Quebec) and
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) both scored twice.
Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA),
Kristen Wagner (Orange, CA),
Alyssa Analytis (Montreal, Quebec), and
Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) all had one goal apiece.
Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) stopped six shots in goal for the Hawks.
Hartwick got off to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. Redlands would narrow the deficit in the second quarter to 5-3 and it was a 9-5 game midway through the third, but the Hawks would go on a 7-0 run to close out the game and come away with the victory.
Hartwick won their second of the game of day against Cal State Monterey Bay 13-6. Zakirova led the way with three goals. Freeborn,
Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) and
Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand) all scored twice. Dendy Young, Kosich, Bass, and
Sami Capparelli (Miami, CA) all had one goal each.
After falling behind early in the contest 1-0, Hartwick rallied to score three straight times and led 3-1 with 3:26 left to play in the first quarter. The Otters would rally to score two goals and the game was tied 3-3 after one quarter of play.
With the scored tied at 4-4 with 5:47 left in the second quarter, the Hawks would pull away in the game as they would go on a 8-0 run spanning the second, third, and fourth quarters and had a comfortable lead of 13-4 with 5:15 left in the final quarter. The Otters would score twice more to complete the scoring in the game.
Hartwick improves their record to 19-7 overall. They will next head to Los Angeles to face the #3 ranked University of Southern California Trojans on Wednesday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. local time.
