Water Polo Completes Weekend Sweep at Roadrunner Invitational

BAKERSFIELD, CA- The Hartwick women's water polo team ended the weekend a perfect 4-0 as they swept both of their games at the Roadrunner Invitational on Sunday.

The Hawks defeated Santa Clara 12-8 in the first game. Lisa Bass (Montreal, Quebec) and Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) both scored three times to lead Hartwick. Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan), Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA), Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA), Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI), and Kristen Wagner (Orange, CA) all scored once.

Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) had three saves in goal.

Hartwick got off to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and made it 3-0 on Bass' first goal of the day with 5:42 remaining in the second quarter. The Hawks would lead 6-2 at halftime.

The Broncos would rally in the third quarter as they scored four times with the fourth goal coming with 33 seconds left in the third and Hartwick holding on to an 8-6 lead.

It quickly was an 8-7 contest with 5:20 remaining in the game. Following a timeout with 3:08 left on the clock, 'Wick would go on a 4-1 run the rest of the way to hold off the Bronco rally and come away with the victory.

In the second game, the Hawks squeaked by the host Roadrunners 13-11 in overtime. Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) scored three goals to lead Hartwick. Shannon Leonard (Ponte Clair, Quebec), Bass, Freeborn, and Martinez all scored twice. Zakirova and Kosich both had one goal each.

Cox stopped nine shots. Freeborn and Bass also saw time in goal and had one save each.

The Hawks quickly got ahead 2-0 in the first quarter but the Roadrunners would score three straight to take the lead with 47 ticks left but it would be short-lived as Kosich's goal 44 seconds later would knot the game at 3-all.

Hartwick would take back the lead 25 seconds into the second quarter but CSU Bakersfield would tie the game up just 36 seconds later. The Hawks would regain the lead later in the second quarter and led 7-5 at halftime.

The match was tied 8-8 heading into the final quarter of play. The Roadrunners scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to go ahead 10-8 with 6:51 left to play. The Hawks would rally to tie the game up with 2:24 remaining and hold off CSU Bakersfield to force overtime.

Hartwick scored twice in the first overtime period to go ahead 12-10. The Roadrunners would score once early in the second overtime period to narrow the deficit but that was as close as they would get as Dendy Young's third goal of the game with four seconds remaining sealed it for the Hawks.

Hartwick's record now stands at 23-8. They will return to the east coast to face Princeton on Friday night at 7 p.m.
