Hawks Fall to #10 Stevens in Home Finale

ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick men's lacrosse team was no match for visiting Stevens as the #10 Ducks won 17-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Wright Stadium in the Hawks' home finale. Stevens improves their record to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8. The Hawks fall to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in the Empire 8.

Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/ Sachem East) led the Hawks with two goals. Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) and John Horner (Bedford Falls, NY/Fox Lane) both added one goal. Connor Hudson had six groundballs to lead the team.

Charlie Cronin paced the Ducks with six goals. Nicolas Philippi had four goals. Harry Dorne scored three times. Alex Hofrichter contributed two goals. Rich Dupras and Liam McAdams chipped in one goal each.

Stevens scored first with 13:04 left in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. Hartwick would answer right back when Schaefer fed Hughes who deposited a long shot that rolled into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 11:18 remaining in the quarter. The Ducks then rattled off six straight scores to close the quarter and lead 7-1.

Stevens picked up right where they left off in the second quarter as the Hawks had no answer for the Ducks offense. The Ducks scored on four possessions to lead 11-1 with 6:31 left to play in the second quarter. With just under five minutes left in the half, Hughes would score his second goal of the game to make it an 11-2 game. Stevens would add one more score with 11 seconds left on the clock to go into halftime up 11-2.

In the third quarter, the Ducks would score on the extra-man opportunity to go up 13-2 with 11:49 on the clock. Schaefer's goal with 8:18 left in the third would make it a 13-3 game. Stevens would go on to score four of the game's final five goals to come away with the victory.

Nick Triano (North Andover, MA/St. John's Prep) got the start in goal for Hartwick and had three saves. He was replaced by Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) in the second quarter and he came up with seven saves.

Matthew Deiner started for the Ducks between the pipes and stopped 11 shots in 51:31 of game time. He was replaced by Ben Shaffer who did not record a save in 8:29 of game time.

The Ducks led in shots 41-31 and in groundballs, 34-30. The Hawks led in face-offs won, 16-9.

Hartwick will close out the 2012 season this Saturday on the road against Alfred. Game time will be at 1 p.m.
