ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick fell for the fifth time by a 5-4 decision on Wednesday in the Hawks' final game of the 2012 campaign. 'Wick fell just short of an upset win over its cross-city rivals, Oneonta State. The Hawks close out the campaign 2-10 overall. The Red Dragons improve to 12-5.
The match was all knotted up at 4-4 with just the third singles match left to be decided. Hartwick senior
Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military Academy) won the first set 6-4 over Oneonta's Joey Milstein. The Red Dragon would return the favor by an identical 6-4 score in the second set to force a tie-breaker to determine the outcome. In the tie-break, Milstein would edge Navarro, 8-6, to secure the 5-4 team victory.
Senior
Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional) finished his career at Hartwick with a big three-set win at first singles over David Goldberg. After falling in the first set, 6-4, Boyd battled back and rolled in the next two, 6-1, 6-2, for the win.
Junior
Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) secured another three-set win for the Hawks in the second singles flight. He downed Adam Shapiro, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 for his sixth victory (6-2) on the year.
Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson Central) won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. He defeated Oneonta's Jordan Reilly in the sixth flight.
Boyd and Dumas teamed up for their sixth win of the season in doubles. The duo defeated
Mackenzie Park and Goldberg, 8-5.
Navarro closes out his Hartwick career with a singles record of 32-18. Boyd ends his four years with 28 singles wins and 27 doubles victories, all while competing at the top flights since his freshman year.
The day also marked the final matches for Hartwick seniors
Bobby Amberson (Raeford, NC/Middletown HS) and
Ron Lambertson (Wawarsing, NY/Ellenville HS).
