ELMIRA, NY- The Hartwick men's basketball team kept pace early in the first half but host Elmira was hot shooting the ball as the Soaring Eagles defeated the Hawks 88-62 on Friday night at Speidel Gymnasium. The loss ends 'Wick's four-game winning streak as it falls to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the Empire 8. Elmira improves to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in the Empire 8.
Elmira shot nearly 51% from the floor (29-of-57) to Hartwick's 38.5% (20-of-52). The Soaring Eagles did most of their damage from behind the three-point line as they shot 42.3% (11-of-26) to the Hawks' 27.3% (6-of-22).
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) led Hartwick with 12 points.
Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) contributed 10 points.
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
The Soaring Eagles were led by Chris Cassidy who scored 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds. Derrick Vogel scored 18 points, dished out eight assists, and grabbed six rebounds. He hit 4-of-6 of his three-point attempts.
Josh Keys scored 15 points off the bench. Kurt Dutcher chipped in 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Elmira started off the game quickly as it went on a 10-4 run to start the game. The Hawks would answer back and assembled a 9-2 run, punctuated by a Keane three-pointer, to take a 13-12 lead at 12:38.
The one-point advantage proved to be short-lived as the Soaring Eagles then embarked on a 25-6 run spanning over ten minutes of game time to surge ahead 38-18 with 1:53 showing on the clock. During that run, Elmira hit five three-point shots including three coming from Keys. The EC defense also held the Hawks in check as they did not make a field goal until Bradley's layup with 2:23 left in the half. Hartwick would reduce the deficit to 16 points at halftime, 40-24.
In the second half, Hartwick would try to stay in the game as a Keane layup would narrow the Elmira lead to 15 points, 49-34, at 14:22. An 18-8 EC run that covered over seven and a half minutes of game time proved to be too much for Hartwick to overcome as Elmira burst out to an 67-41 lead at 7:48 to stay out in front the rest of the way.
While both teams committed 10 turnovers in the contest, the Soaring Eagles took advantage of the Hartwick miscues as they outscored the Hawks 18-7 off of those turnovers. Elmira had a sizable lead in rebounds, 39-24.
EC dished out double the amount of assists that Hartwick had, 18-9. Elmira had a slight edge in points in the paint, 28-26, and in bench points, 32-27.
Hartwick will return to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon with a game against first-place Ithaca. The two teams will meet for the first time since the Empire 8 semifinals last season when the Bombers won 79-67 on their way to the Empire 8 championship. Game time will be 4 p.m.
