Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) scored the game-winning goal with just over two minutes left to play and the Hartwick defense held up as the Hawks upset #12 Indiana 8-7 in the first of three matches at the Bucknell Tournament. The Hawks also defeated Mercyhurst 18-7 and George Washington University 23-12. The three wins up Hartwick's record to 8-6.
Capparelli scored five times to lead the Hawks against the Hoosiers.
Britt Tait (Kairong, Australia) added a pair of goals and
Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) had one goal.
Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) had a game-high four steals.
Michaela Davies,
(Cronulla, Australia), making her first career start in the cage, stopped 14 shots.
Capparelli scored her first goal of the game 6:14 into the first quarter. The Hoosiers tied it up at the 5:01 mark and the contest stayed that way after one period of play.
The Hawks would go ahead 3-1 in the second frame on goals by Tait and Capparelli. Indiana would tack on one goal with 27 seconds left and 'Wick went into halftime with a 3-2 lead.
Back-to-back goals by Capparelli and Martinez extended the Hartwick advantage to 5-2 at 6:12. Two Hoosier goals would narrow the Hawk lead to 5-4. 'Wick would add two more goals and the Hoosiers would add one as the Hawks led 7-5 heading into the final quarter of play.
In the final quarter, Indiana would score twice to tie the game at 7-7 at 4:36.
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) would earn a penalty at 2:02 and the Hawks would take advantage as Capparelli's score on the power play lifted Hartwick to the win.
Against Mercyhurst,
Jemma Dendy Young scored four times and had four steals to lead 'Wick.
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) had a hat trick. Capparelli, Martinez,
Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA), and
Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI) all had a pair of scores.
Kamila Zakirova (Almaty Kazakhstan), Ermakova, and
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa) all scored once.
Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) dished out three assists.
Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) got the start in goal and had 11 saves.
The Lakers struck first at 6:45 of the first quarter. Hartwick tied than took the lead on
Lara Dendy Young's score at 4:42. Mercyhurst would tie the game twice but the Hawks added two goals in the final 37 seconds of the quarter to go up 5-3.
'Wick took a 6-3 lead on Kuzma's first score of the game at 7:05. After the Lakers made it a 6-4 contest at 5:23, the Hawks would score five straight times to surge ahead 11-4 with 2:30 left in the quarter. The Lakers tacked on one more goal with 34 seconds remaining as Hartwick took an 11-5 at the half.
'Wick cruised in the second half as its lead was never threatened. Hartwick outscored the Lakers 7-2.
Zakirova and
Jemma Dendy Young both scored four goals against George Washington. Capparelli, Tonkin,
Lara Dendy Young,
Kanani Mazzone (Kapolei, HI), and Kuzma all notched two goals.
Lilly Gall (Portland, OR),
Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand), Tait, Ermakova, Traube, and
Logan Reed (Houston, TX) all tallied one score.
Davies started in goal and stopped five shots. Cox played the second half and had seven saves.
Hartwick scored the game's first four goals to go up 4-0 and led 8-1 after the first quarter. The Hawks took a 14-3 lead at halftime.
The Colonials scored the first goal of the third quarter to reduce their deficit to 10. It was close as they would get as 'Wick maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half and never relented.
Hartwick will wrap up the two-day tournament with two matches on Sunday. The Hawks will face #10 Brown at 9:10 a.m. followed by Princeton at 4:10 p.m.
