Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) scored six goals to lead the Hartwick water polo team to an 18-7 victory over Brown at the Bucknell Tournament on Sunday in the first of two matches on the day. In the afternoon game, the Hawks lost a heartbreaker to #10 Princeton 8-7. The loss snaps Hartwick's six-game winning streak and drops its record to 9-7.
Against the Bears,
Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) added four goals while
Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) netted a hat trick.
Britt Tait (Kairong, Australia) had a pair of scores.
Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA),
Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD), and
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa) all scored once.
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) got the start in the cage and stopped three shots.
Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) played the second half and blocked six shots.
Hartwick struck just 13 seconds into the opening quarter when Tait scored to put the Hawks ahead 1-0. Ermakova's goal made it 2-0 Hawks at 5:12 before the Bears got on the board with 1:16 left in the quarter. Capparelli's first score of the day with just over a minute remaining in the period gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead going into the second quarter. Hartwick dominated in the second frame as it outscored Brown 8-1 to pull ahead 11-2 at the half.
The Bears would score twice early in the third quarter to get to within seven of Hartwick. It would be as close as they could get as 'Wick continued to pour on the offense and outscored Brown 7-3 the rest of the way to claim the victory.
In the Princeton game, Capparelli notched a pair of goals to lead the Hawks. Tait, Ermakova, Dendy Young, and
Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) all scored once. Davies had nine saves in the cage.
The match was a close affair with neither team establishing a significant lead. Princeton scored the game's first goal at 6:15 for the early 1-0 advantage. The Hawks responded with goals from Dendy Young and Tait to go ahead 2-1 at 4:46. After the Tigers came back with two goals of their own to retake the lead, 'Wick tied it with just under two minutes left in the period on Capparelli's first score of the game. Princeton came back to take the lead at 1:09 4-3.
In the second quarter, a Tiger goal at 6:32 moved them ahead 5-3. The score would stay that way for most of the quarter until a late goal with one second on the clock pushed Princeton out to a 6-3 lead going into halftime.
The Hawks received goals from Kosich and Ermakova in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to one goal, 6-5, with 5:34 showing on the clock. Princeton would score once in the quarter and the game stood at 7-5 going into the fourth and final frame. Hartwick managed to score with 1:37 left to play on Capparelli's second score of the contest but it was not enough as the Tigers held on for the win.
Hartwick is off next weekend and will next compete at the Marist Tournament on March 2. The Hawks will face Notre Dame (OH) at 10 a.m. followed by Iona at 1:00 p.m. and wrap up with Wagner at 5:30 p.m.
