Hartwick Water Polo Competes at Stanford Invitational

Jemma Dendy Young
PALO ALTO, CA- The women's water polo team played two matches on Sunday at the Stanford Invitational. Hartwick faced #8 San Jose State University in the first match of the day.  The Hawks fell to the Spartans, 12-4.

Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) led 'Wick with two goals and added a steal. Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) scored once, assisted on another goal, and had three steals. Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) scored once while adding an assist and a kick-out drawn. Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) had eight saves in the Hartwick cage.

Hartwick trailed 4-0 after the first quarter. The Hawks tallied two goals in the second frame but the Spartans added three scores to pull ahead 7-2 at halftime. 'Wick trailed 9-3 after the third quarter and the Spartans added three more goals that was too much to overcome as San Jose State rode out the victory.

In the second match of the day, the Hawks faced fellow CWPA Western Division rival #14 Indiana University. Despite a rally in the final quarter of play, Hartwick fell to the Hoosiers, 9-6.

Capparelli led the Hawks with five goals. Dendy Young tallied one goal. Cox stopped six shots in the 'Wick cage.

After trailing 2-0 in the first quarter, Hartwick got on the board with two scores. The Hoosiers would score three times to take a 5-2 lead at halftime. The third quarter was a low-scoring affair as Indiana scored once to increase its lead to 6-2.

The Hawks rallied in the final frame with a four-goal outburst. Indiana would not be denied in the end as it tacked on three goals to hold off Hartwick and pull out the victory.

'Wick continues its California trip as it visits #7 San Diego State on Thursday. Game time will be at 3 p.m. local time.
