SAN DIEGO, CA- Katie Kammer scored with 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to give the University of California Northridge a 13-12 win against the Hartwick women's water polo team at the UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday in the first of two matches for the Hawks on the day.
Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) led the Hawks with five goals.
Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD),
Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) and
Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) all had two goals.
Kamila Zakirova (Almaty Kazakhstan) had one goal.
The Matadors were led by Lindsy Nelson's four goals. Jenny Jamison, Melissa Doll, and Celena Photopoulos both had two goals. Kelcie Ferreira, Marisa Young, and Kammer all scored score once.
Capparelli scored on a man-up goal at 3:15 of the first quarter. The Matadors would score three straight times to take a 3-1 lead with 1:12 showing on the clock. The Hawks tied the game on goals by Zakirova and Kosich with the tying goal coming at 17 seconds.
In the second quarter, Ermakova's score would give Hartwick the 4-3 lead at 5:56. After a goal by the Matadors, Zakoirva tied the game again. Four straight Northridge goals would stake the Matadors to an 8-5 lead at halftime.
'Wick would start to climb its way back into the contest on Capparelli's second of the day at 7:18 and then a Ermakova's second tally at 5:05 made it 8-7. The Matadors would tack on one score in the period and the game stood at 9-7 after three quarters of play.
Back to back goals by Capparelli and Kosich in the fourth frame would knot the game at 9-all at 5:43 and CSUN was forced to call a timeout. Following the timeout, goals by Capparelli put the Hawks ahead 11-9 with 3:58 remaining to play. The Matadors would rally with three straight scores to go up 12-11 at 2:02. Martinez's goal with 55 seconds remaining tied the match at 12-all. The game was tied for 31 seconds until Kammer won the game for CSUN in the final seconds.
In the afternoon game, Simone Call scored for California East Bay with just four seconds left to give the Pioneers a 14-13 win over the Hawks. With two losses on the day, Hartwick drops its record to 3-6.
Capparelli and Zakirova both scored three times to lead 'Wick.
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) and
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) both tallied two goals each. Kosich, Martinez, and
Kanani Mazzone (Kalopei, HI) all scored one time.
CSU East Bay received three goals from both Sara Hudyn and Claire Pierce. Julia Charlesworth and Kate Michte both scored twice. Allison Zell, Nicole Meyer, Casey Rushforth, and Call all tallied one goal.
Hartwick led 2-1 after the first quarter. The Hawks pushed their lead to 5-2 at 4:30 of the second quarter. Following a Pioneer timeout, CSU East Bay responded with a goal from Charlesworth to make it a 5-3 game. Capparelli's second score of the game gave the Hawks a three-score advantage but the Pioneers would rattle off three straight goals to tie the game at six. Zakirova gave Hartwick the lead back with 24 seconds left on the clock and the Hawks were up 7-6 at halftime.
The third quarter was a back and forth affair with both teams exchanging goals. There were four ties and three lead changes and in the end it was a 10-10 tie going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the game was still tied heading into the final minute of play. The Pioneers had final possession and Call would score her first and only goal of the game to give Cal State East Bay the win.
Hartwick will return to action tomorrow morning with a game against Santa Clara. The two teams will face off at 8 a.m. local time.
