ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick women's water polo team led from start to finish as they easily defeated Brown 21-8 on Senior Night at Moyer Pool. Earlier in the day, the Hawks won over Connecticut College 14-5. With the two wins, Hartwick improves its record to 18-7 overall. The Hawks also increase their home unbeaten streak to 57 games dating back to 2002.
Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) led Hartwick in scoring with six goals on the night against the Bears.
Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) added five scores.
Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) had four goals.
Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) scored a pair of goals.
Britt Tait (Kairong, Austraila),
Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan),
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), and
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) all scored once.
The Hawks got off to a quick 2-0 lead before the Bears got on the board with a goal at 5:01. Following a goal from Capparelli, Brown scored again to get to within one goal of tying the game, 3-2. 'Wick would close out the first frame on a 4-0 run to lead 7-2.
The Hawks run extended to 7-0 on Kosich's score at 5:30 of the second quarter and the Hawks led 10-2. Hartwick would outscore the Browns 3-2 for the remainder of the period to lead 13-4 at halftime.
'Wick would hold its sizable lead in the second half. The Hawk defense would hold up in the fourth quarter as the Bears were shutout in the frame.
Earlier in the day against the Camels,
Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand) and
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) both scored three goals to pace the Hawks. Kosich
and Ermakova added a pair of scores.
Lilly Gall (Portland, OR), Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI), and
Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) all scored once.
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) started in the Hartwick cage and stopped two shots while also adding a steal and an assist.
Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) had six saves, two steals, and one assist.
Seabourn scored first at 5:57 of the first quarter to put Hartwick ahead 1-0. After the Camels tied it up at 1-1 with 5:24 left in the period, the Hawks embarked on a 10-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters to surge ahead 11-1 at the half.
In the second half, Connecticut opened the third quarter with a goal to end the Hartwick scoring streak at 6:24. The Camels would outscore the Hawks 4-3 in the second half but Hartwick was ahead comfortably to come away with the victory.
The Brown game marked the final home contest for seniors Kosich, Seabourn, Cox, Kuzma, Freeborn, and
Lily Martinez (Stockton, CA). All six seniors were honored before the game.
The Hawks will head out west next weekend to compete in the Arizona State Sun Devil Tournament. They will play Pomona and Cal Baptist next Saturday followed by Colorado State and and La Verne on Sunday. Hartwick wraps up the three-day tournament with a meeting versus #2 Stanford and a matchup against the #3 Sun Devils on Monday.
