Water Polo Goes 3-0 at Marist Tournament

Sami Capparelli scored nine times on the day.
POUGHKEEPISE, NY- The women's water polo team had a clean sweep on Saturday as it went 3-0 at the Marist Tournament. In the morning match, Hartwick defeated Notre Dame College 15-5. The Hawks faced Iona in the afternoon and defeated the Gaels 16-8. In the nightcap, 'Wick scored seven straight times in the second half to defeat Wagner 16-10. Hartwick's record now stands at 12-7.
 
Against the Falcons, Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) led the Hawks with four scores. Britt Tait (Kairong, Australia) and Lilly Gall (Portland, OR) both had three tallies. Kanani Mazzone (Kapolei, HI) scored twice. Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan), Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI), and Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) all had one goal each.
 
Hartwick led 6-0 after the first quarter. Notre Dame would score twice early in the second quarter to make the score 6-2. Gall scored a pair of goals to give the Hawks back their six score lead. The Falcons would close to within five scores but two more Hawk goals gave them a 10-3 lead at halftime.
 
The second half belonged to 'Wick as the defense held the Falcons to just two goals. Hartwick scored a total of five times spanning the third and fourth quarters to come away with the lopsided victory.
 
In the afternoon match versus the Gales, Zakirova was the leading scorer for the Hawks with four goals. Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) netted a hat trick. Tait, Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA), and Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) all had a pair of scores. Capparelli, Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), and Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand) all scored once.
 
The Hawks found themselves in a 1-0 hole early in the first quarter. Capparelli would tie the game up at one each but two more Gael scores gave Iona a 3-1 advantage. The Hawks closed the gap to one score but another Iona goal gave them a 4-2 lead after one period.
 
In the second quarter, 'Wick broke out a 4-0 run to lead 6-4 with 2:47 remaining. Iona scored 29 seconds later to narrow the lead to one but Ermakova would tack on a score at 1:17 to give the Hawks the 7-5 lead at halftime.
 
Hartwick scored four times in just over a two minute span in the third frame to pull ahead 12-5 at 4:42. Two Iona goals reduced the Hawk lead to 12-7 but 'Wick would outscore the Gaels 4-1 in the final quarter to come away with the win.
 
In the Wagner match, Capparelli led the way with five goals. Ermakova, Zakirova, Kosich, Jemma Dendy Young and Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) all scored a pair of goals. Seabourn had one score.

The Seahawks scored the game's opening goal to go up 1-0. Hartwick would answer with three straight scores to take a 3-1 lead. After Wagner tacked on a goal to make it 3-2, the Hawks would outscore the Seahawks 3-1 the rest of the quarter to go up 6-3.

In the second quarter, Wagner scored three times get to within one goal of tying the game. Each time Hartwick responded with  a score of its own with the final time coming with 17 seconds remaining in the period as the Hawks went into halftime with a 9-7 lead. 

In the third quarter, the Seahawks would rally to tie the game at nine-all at the 4:14 mark. That would be as close as they would get as the Hawks rattled off seven straight goals to surge ahead 16-9 with 1:29 left in the fourth frame. Wagner would end the Hawks scoring streak with 21 seconds left to play but it was too late as 'Wick came away victorious.

Hartwick returns home to host four matches next Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Hawks will play Gannon at 9 a.m., St. Francis at 1:30 p.m., Siena at 3 p.m., and Marist at 6 p.m.
