Water Polo Powers Past Pomona and Cal Baptist at Arizona State Invitational

Cayley Tonkin scored a career-high five goals against Pomona
TEMPE, AZ- The Hartwick water polo team raced out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back as the Hawks defeated Pomona 19-7 on Saturday morning at the Arizona State Invitational. In the afternoon match, 'Wick outscored Cal Baptist 6-1 in the second half on its way to a 13-6 victory. The two wins up Hartwick's record to 20-7 overall, marking the 12th consecutive 20-win season for the program.

Against Pomona, Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) and Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) both scored five goals to lead Hartwick. Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA), Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), and Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) all tallied two goals each. Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA), Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD), and Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) scored one goal apiece.

Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) received the start in goal for Hartwick and had nine saves. Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) came in the fourth quarter and had four saves.

Alyssa Woodward led the Sagehens with three goals. Sarah Westcott, Katy Schafer, Mahalia Prater-Fahey, and Brenda Iglesias all scored once. Sarah Tussy started in goal and had seven saves. Sallie Walkecka came on in the fourth quarter and stopped two shots.

The Hawks scored quickly in the game as Capparelli got her first goal of the day just 13 seconds into the contest. Martinez tacked on a goal just 25 seconds later to put Hartwick ahead 2-0. Capparelli's second score at 6:52 pushed 'Wick ahead 3-0. The Hawks would eventually go up 8-1 at the end of the first period.

The Sagehens would score the first goal of the second quarter to make it an 8-2 game. The Hawks then went on a 5-1 run to go up 13-3 at halftime.

Hartwick led by as much as 19-4 after going on a 6-1 run that ended at 3:02 of the final period. Pomona scored the game's final three goals but the Hawks were comfortably ahead and cruised to the win.

In the Cal Baptist match, Capparelli and Ermakova both scored three times to lead the Hawks. Zakirova, Jemma Dendy Young, and Lara Dendy Young all scored twice. Britt Tait (Kairong, Australia) added one goal. Davies got the start in goal and stopped nine shots.

The Lancers were led by Hannah Evans' two goals. Briana Tryon, Laura Kocsis, Samantha Banks, and Courtney Menard all tallied one score. Laura Medeiros blocked nine shots in the cage.

Capparelli scored first for Hartwick at 6:39 of the first quarter to put the Hawks ahead 1-0. The Lancers would answer back with two goals and led 2-1 with five minutes to play in the frame. Hartwick answered with three straight goals to lead 4-2 after one period of play.

Cal Baptist narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in the early stages of the second quarter. Hartwick separated itself from the Lancers with two goals to take a 6-3 lead. The Lancers would stay within reasonable distance of the Hawks as the score stood 8-5 in favor of Hartwick at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Hawks scored three times to pull ahead 11-5. The 'Wick defense held firm as it shutout the Lancers in the period. The fourth frame was a low scoring affair that saw the Hawks outscore Cal Baptist 2-1 to come out with the 13-6 victory.

Hartwick continues play tomorrow with two matches. The Hawks will face Colorado State University at 10 a.m. local time followed by the University of La Verne at 1:30 p.m.
