TEMPE, AZ- The #19 Hartwick women's water polo team faced a tough task as it played two top-ranked teams in #2 Stanford and #3 Arizona State at the ASU Invitational on Monday. The Hawks had a 13-game winning streak heading into today's matchup with the Cardinal but saw that streak come to an end as Stanford defeated Hartwick 13-4. In the second match, the host Sun Devils came out on top 12-3.

Stanford raced out to an early 6-0 in the first quarter. Following a timeout, the Hawks finally got on the scoreboard on Kamila Zakirova's (Almaty, Kazakhstan) goal. The Cardinal added one score with five seconds left to go up 7-1 after one period of play.

The two teams battled in the second frame and Stanford scored the only goal of the quarter at 3:51. The Cardinal led 8-1 at the half.

Stanford scored twice in the third quarter to move ahead 10-1. The Hawks would start to chip away at the lead and trailed 10-3 with 45 seconds remaining in the third. It was still a seven goal lead at 5:39 of the fourth quarter but that was as close as the Hawks could get as Stanford scored twice more to come away with the win.

For Hartwick, Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) scored twice to lead the team. Zakirova and Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) both tallied one goal. Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) got the start in goal and stopped nine shots.

Stanford was led by the trio of Melissa Seidemann, Maggie Steffens, and Kaley Dodson who scored three goals each. Anna Yelizarova scored twice. Kelsey Suggs, Ashley Grossman, and Annika Dries all scored once.

Emily Dorst started in goal for the Cardinal and made five saves. Gabby Stone came in relief had six saves.

In the second match of the day, the Hawks kept the Sun Devils at bay early on as Arizona State led only 2-0 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw ASU score four times to lead 6-0 at 3:33. The Hawks would finally get on the board with 51 seconds remaining in the frame when Capparelli scored a five-meter goal and the score stood 6-1 at the half.

Capparelli picked up where she left off in the third quarter with a goal to make it 6-2 ASU. After two Sun Devil scores, Zakoriva found the back of the cage at 4:15 to narrow the deficit to 8-3.  That would be it for 'Wick as ASU scored four times to pull away for the victory.

Capparelli led the Hawks with two goals. Zakirova had one. Davies stopped seven shots in the Hawk cage.

The Sun Devils were led by Anna Kertes and Shannon Haas who both scored four times. Ao Gao had a pair of scores. Petra Pardi and Abigail Kerth scored once. E.B. Keeve had 13 saves in goal.

The Hawks (22-9) are idle until next Tuesday when they visit Siena College. Game time will be at 7 p.m.
