Water Polo Sweeps at Moyer Pool

Sasha Freeborn totaled six goals, nine assists, and three steals on the day.
ONEONTA, NY- The women's water polo team played host to four teams on Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Hawks went a perfect 4-0 on the day to improve their record to 16-7 overall. Hartwick defeated Gannon 16-7 in the first game of the day, St. Francis 19-7,  Siena 22-13, and wrapped up the day with a 15-7 win over Marist.

In the Gannon victory, Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) led the way with five goals. Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) scored twice while adding one assist and a team-high five steals. Britt Tait (Kairong, Australia) added a pair of scores while chipping in one assist, one steal, and two drawn kick-outs. Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) scored twice and added a steal and a drawn kick-out. Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) scored once and dished out a team-high four assists. Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) tallied one goal, three assists, and one steal. Logan Reed (Houston, TX), Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI), and Lily Gall (Portland, OR) all scored once.

Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) started in the cage and had five total saves in the first and third quarter. Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) played the second and fourth quarters and totaled eight saves and two assists.

Hartwick got off to a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Knights would narrow the Hawk lead with a score to make it 3-1. The Hawks went up as much as 5-1 with 2:11 left in the period before Gannon added two scores and Hartwick tacked on another to lead 6-3 after one period of play.

The Hawks scored seven times in the second quarter to lead 13-3 at halftime. It was 14-3 'Wick at 4:42 of the third. The Knights finally ended the Hartwick scoring streak with a goal at 1:03 of the third. The Knights would rally a bit with three straight scores to trail 14-7 at 3:16. It would be as close as they would get as Hartwick added two goals to pull ahead for the win.

Against the Terriers, Capparelli was again the leading scorer with four goals. Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) netted a hat trick and added one assist, two steals, and one drawn kick-out. Natalie Seabourn (Auckland, New Zealand) scored twice as did Zakirova, Cox, Freeborn, and Tonkin. Tait chipped in one goal and a steal. Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) also scored once while adding two assists and two steals.

Davies got the start in goal and stopped five shots and assisted on three goals. Cox saw time in the cage in the second and fourth quarters and had eight saves, two assists, and one steal.

The Hawks led 3-0 with 3:36 left in the first quarter until St. Francis scored twice to make it a 3-2 contest with 44 seconds remaining in the quarter. A goal by Seabourn at 17 seconds gave 'Wick a 4-2 advantage.

A 7-0 burst in the second quarter put the Hawks on top 11-2 with 2:06 remaining. Hartwick cruised the rest of the way for the win as the Terriers never threatened.

Capparelli scored four times in Hartwick's rout over the Saints. Kosich and Jemma Dendy Young both had hat tricks with Kosich coming away with one steal while Dendy Young picked up three steals and an assist. Gall, Freeborn, and Lara Dendy Young totaled six goals and five assists. Seabourn along with Kanani Mazzone (Kalopei, HI), Reed, Ermakova, and Kuzma all chipped in one goal apiece.

The Hawks led 7-0 early in the second quarter. The Saints finally got on the board with their first goal of the game at 7:14. Three times the Saints would narrow the 'Wick lead to six goals with the final time coming with two seconds left in the third quarter. The Hawks quickly answered with a goal and proceeded to outscore the Saints 5-3 in the final frame to come out victorious.

Hartwick was led by Capparelli's five goals in the Marist victory. Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) added four goals, one assist, three steals, and one drawn kick-out. Ermakova tacked on three goals, two steals, one assist, and one kick-out drawn. Seabourn contributed a pair of scores and Freeborn had one goal, three assists, two steals, and a drawn kick-out.

'Wick led 4-0 early in the second quarter. After the Red Foxes scored to narrow the lead to 4-1, two more Hawk goals made it a 6-1 game. Marist cut the Hartwick lead to 6-3 at halftime.

Hartwick went ahead 9-3 at the 5:19 mark of the third quarter and the Red Foxes cut the deficit to five goals, 9-4, at 4:34. It was as close as Marist would get as Hartwick outscored them 6-3 the rest of the way to close out the day with a victory.

The Hawks return to Moyer Pool next Saturday for three games. Hartwick begins the day with a 9 a.m. match with Salem International followed by Connecticut College at 4 p.m. and wrapping up with Brown at 7 p.m.
