Men’s Lacrosse Stopped by Nazareth

Mike Vaglica scored a career-high five goals to lead the Hawks.

ONEONTA, NY- Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) and Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) combined for nine scores to lead the men's lacrosse team but visiting Nazareth was too much to overcome as it defeated the Hawks 18-10 on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The loss drops 'Wick to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8 while the Golden Flyers improve to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the E8.

Nazareth took the opening faceoff and raced down the field for the game's first goal eight seconds into the contest to go up 1-0. The Golden Flyers then went up 2-0 at 11:32.

Hartwick finally got on the scoreboard at 6:10 when Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayeteville-Manlius) dished off to Hughes for the goal and the score stood at 2-1 in favor of Nazareth. After the Golden Flyers answered back at 5:15, Hughes responded with his second goal of the game at 3:28 as the Hawks again trailed by one score. Nazareth tacked on two more goals in the quarter to lead 5-2 after one period of play.

Vaglica scored his first goal of the game at 11:52 of the second quarter to make it 5-3. The Hartwick defense stayed firm as it held Nazareth at bay for more than half of the frame. The Golden Flyers finally broke through with a goal from Chris Peterson at 6:05 and Troy Haefele got his third goal of the game at 1:30 as the score stood at 7-3 in Nazareth's favor at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Golden Flyers increased their lead to 8-3 at 13:18. Vaglica answered with his second goal of the day at 10:31 to narrow the Golden Flyer lead to 8-4. Nazareth scored twice more to go up 10-4 but Hartwick would respond with two goals of its own to trail 10-6 with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. Luke Wooters scored for Nazareth with 52 seconds remaining to put the Golden Flyers on top 11-6.

Nazareth scored three goals within 25 seconds in the final stanza to surge ahead 14-6 with 13:16 remaining on the clock. 'Wick would counter with three straight scores but still trailed 14-9 at 8:15. Four more Nazareth goals gave the visiting team a little more breathing room as it went up 18-9. Hartwick scored at 2:40 to complete the scoring in the game.

Vaglica had a career day with five goals and assisted on another. Hughes scored four times. Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) had one goal and three assists.

Troy Haefele had four goals to lead Nazareth. Wooters had a hat trick. Colin Clark, Chris Aycock, Kyle Fanning, and Peterson all had a pair of scores. Trevar Haefele and Chris Benza both tallied one goal each.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) stopped 11 shots in goal for the Hawks. Scott Brown had 10 saves for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth led in shots, 40-34, and in ground balls, 31-22. The Golden Flyers also won 23 face-offs. Hartwick did lead in caused turnovers, 12-9.

The Hawks return to action next Saturday when they travel to Ithaca to take on the Bombers. Opening face-off will be at 12 p.m.
