Men’s Lacrosse Falls to #20 Ithaca

ITHACA, NY- The Ithaca men's lacrosse team powered its way to a 9-0 first half lead as it defeated Hartwick 15-5 on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Stadium. The Hawks drop to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the Empire 8. The Bombers, who are ranked #20 in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll, improve to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the E8.

For the second straight game, Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) led the Hawks in goals with three and added one assist for a total of four points on the afternoon. Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) both contributed one score each.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) stopped 15 shots in goal for Hartwick. His total is the second-highest in a game this season. Lengel also had a season-high six ground balls.

The Bombers led 4-0 after the first quarter of play. They would tack on five more scores in the second quarter to go up 9-0 at halftime.

The IC lead increased to 10-0 at 10:28 of the third quarter on a man-up goal by Steve Danylyshyn. 'Wick would finally get on the scoreboard when Vaglica dished off to Simmons to make it a 10-1 game at 8:53. After the Bombers answered with a score, Vaglica would get his first goal of the game at 5:09 and the score stood at 11-2 in favor of the home team.

Ithaca ended the third quarter on a 3-1 run to go ahead 14-3. The lone Hartwick score came from Vaglica with 10 seconds remaining in the period.

Hartwick outscored the Bombers 2-1 in the final frame. Cooper scored off a Simmons pass at 10:28 and after IC's Danylyshyn scored his second goal of the afternoon, Vaglica completed the hat trick with 3:25 remaining to play to end the scoring for the day.

Ryan Burns led the Bombers with four goals. Pat Slawta contributed three goals. Danylyshyn and James Manilla both tacked on two scores. Joe Perkins, Jake Long, Dan Sclafani, and Casey Schattner all scored once.

Scott Sidnam got the start in goal and made 10 saves in just under 50 minutes of game time. He was relieved by Andrew Landsman who stopped two shots.

Ithaca led in shots, 44-34, and in ground balls, 48-33. Vaglica, Simmons, and Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd) all picked up five ground balls in the game with Vaglica and Simmons' totals both being season-highs. Pat Leone (Northport, NY/Northport) scooped up four ground balls. Danylyshyn picked up seven ground balls while Eli Gobrecht had six for the Bombers.

Ithaca won 12 face-offs to Hartwick's 11. The teams both had seven caused turnovers.

The Hawks will face another tough opponent on the road when they go up against #6 Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
