ELMIRA, NY – Senior
Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) and sophomore
Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson Central) each notched singles wins for Hartwick but it wasn't enough as the Elmira College Soaring Eagles (6-6) earned a 7-2 victory in Empire 8 Conference men's tennis on Saturday.
The pair nearly picked up a victory at first doubles to send the Hawks into singles play with only a 2-1 deficit but they were edged in a tie-breaker. Dumas and Redder won eight games in the match, equaling Elmira's Keith Bujak and Sam Pine. But the Soaring Eagles prevailed in the race to seven points in the tie-break, 7-3.
In singles play, Dumas won in straight sets over EC number one, Pavle Vashakidze, 6-3, 6-2. With the win, he improves to 3-2 in the Empire 8 at the conference's top flight.
At the second flight, Redder's day was much tighter against Elmira's Steffan Waters. Redder won the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-4). He closed out Waters in the second by a final count of 6-4. Redder ups his conference record to 2-3 on the year.
The Hawks (0-9) will shoot for their first team victory of the season tomorrow afternoon at Utica College. Hartwick has won the 15 matches against the Pioneers dating back to the 2000 season.
