Water Polo Falls to #15 Indiana in CWPA Eastern Championships Third-Place Game

Allison Kosich scored twice against the Hoosiers.
ANN ARBOR, MI- #17 Hartwick faced #15 Indiana in the third-place game at the CWPA Eastern Championships held at the University of Michigan's Canham Natatorium on Sunday afternoon. The Hoosiers led from start to finish as they defeated the Hawks 14-9.

In the opening quarter, Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) drew the exclusion that led to a power play goal from Indiana's Candyce Schroeder to give the Hoosiers the 1-0 lead. Jakie Kohli  scored at 6:39 to put the Hoosiers ahead 2-0.

The Hawks finally got on the scoreboard on a power play when Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) passed to Kosich for the score at 5:22 and 'Wick trailed 2-1. On Indiana's next possession, Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) came up with a steal but Lily Martinez's (Commerce, CA) shot was high. A skip shot from Dendy Young was saved by Hoosier goalie and Player of the Game Jessica Gaudreault. A penalty on Kosich led to a five-meter shot and Indiana's Shae Fournier converted to put the Hoosiers ahead 3-1 at 3:09.

Hartwick drew an Indiana exclusion and with a man advantage, Kamila Zakirova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) snuck a shot past Gaudreault and in to make it 3-2 at 1:37. The Hoosiers responded when Rebecca Gerrity scored and it was 4-2 Indiana with 55 seconds showing on the clock. Another exclusion on the Hoosiers gave the Hawks a power play opportunity where they took advantage when Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) scored off a pass from Freeborn with 25 seconds left in the quarter as the Hawks trailed 4-3.

Indiana started the second frame with a score from Schroeder right in front of Hartwick goalie Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) to go up 5-3. Exclusions on Gerrity and Meghan Lappan at 3:23 gave Hartwick a two-man advantage. Zakoriva scored at 3:06 and it was 5-4. Summer Creighton scored twice for Indiana to give the Hoosiers a 7-4 lead at the half.

In the third stanza, Capparelli had a chance at her second goal of the game but with the shot clock winding down, her shot was denied by Gaudreault. The Hoosiers controlled the third quarter with three goals to go on top 10-4. An exclusion on Kohli gave 'Wick another power play that saw Kosich score off a pass from Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) at 3:11 to make it 10-5. The two teams would exchange goals and Indiana still had a five-goal lead, 11-6, after three quarters of play.

Dendy Young won the sprint in the fourth quarter as Hartwick gained possession. Kosich's shot bounced off the crossbar and Schroder's shot for Indiana was wide left. An exclusion to Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa) gave the Hoosiers a power play that Fournier converted for her third goal of the afternoon at 6:13. Hartwick answered back on a Freeborn to Dendy Young power play goal at 5:54 to make it 12-7.

Fornier notched her fourth goal of the contest at 5:30 on a man-up opportunity to put the Hoosiers ahead 13-7 with 5:30 remaining to play. On another Indiana possession, Martinez came up with the steal and lobbed a pass out to Freeborn whose shot went left of the cage. Freeborn did connect with Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) later at 3:06 to make it 13-8. A battle for possession in front of the Hartwick cage resulted in Indiana's Hallie Lindsey poking the ball past Haley Cox (El Segundo, CA) and in at 2:34 to give the Hoosiers a 14-8 lead. Freeborn completed the scoring with a goal at 57 seconds.

Kosich and Zakirova scored a pair of goals to lead Hartwick. Capparelli, Dendy Young, Freeborn, Ermakova and Kanani Mazzone (Kapolei, HI) all tallied one score each. Davies got the start in goal and stopped six shots. Cox had one blocked shot.

Fornier led the Hoosiers with four goals. Gerrity netted a hat-trick. Schroeder and Creighton both had two goals apiece. Kohli, Lindsey, and Shelby Taylor all had one goal. Gaudreault stopped eight shots while Mary Campbell turned away two shots.

Capparelli and Dendy Young were both named to the All-Tournament first team. Fournier and Kahli represented Indiana on the first team.

The Hawks end their season with a final record of 29-13. This is the second straight year that Hartwick's season has ended with a loss to the Hoosiers. Indiana won the fifth-place game last year at the Eastern Championships, 12-11 in overtime.

The Hoosiers improve to 3-1 against the Hawks this year as the teams split the regular season with Hartwick picking up an 8-7 win and suffering a 9-6 loss before dropping the Western Division title game to Indiana 12-11 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio earlier this month.

Hartwick's fourth-place finish is its second at the Eastern Championships (2011). Over the last decade, the Hawks have tallied first (2004, 2006, 2007), second (2002, 2008, 2009), third (2001, 2005, 2010) fourth (2011), fifth (2003), and sixth (2012) place marks.
