Men’s Tennis Drops E8 Opener at Naz

– Hartwick's men's tennis team came up short at Nazareth on Saturday in the Hawks' Empire 8 Conference opener by a final score of 9-0. The match was played at Mendon Tennis Center in Pittsford.
           
The Hawks slip to 0-4 on the season with the setback. The Golden Eagles improve to 2-8 overall and 1-0 in the league standings.
           
Hartwick sophomore Sean Coppola (Canastota, NY/Canastota HS) nearly came away with his first victory of the season at the fifth singles slot for the Hawks. He outlasted his Golden Eagle counterpart, Tyler Williams, in the first set which went to a tie-breaker. After six games apiece, Coppola would emerge with the first-set win, 7-3. Williams would battle back to take the second set, 6-3, and force a race to 10 points in a third-set super tie-breaker. He would take 10 of 14 points to earn the Naz win.
           
Keith O'Connor (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia HS) won four games for Hartwick at sixth singles against Nick Lord. Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) and Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson Central) came close in first doubles, falling to Ryan McCormick and Williams by a count of 8-5.
           
Hartwick returns to action tomorrow against St. John Fisher. The match is again scheduled for Mendon Tennis Center with a start time of 10 a.m.
