#20 Hartwick Upsets #15 Michigan 10-6 to Claim CWPA Western Division Regular Season Title

Sasha Freeborn scored twice in Hartwick's win over Michigan.
PROVIDENCE, RI- Despite trailing 2-0 early in the first quarter, the #20 ranked Hartwick water polo team recovered to take the lead and hold back a tough Michigan squad as the Hawks upset the #15 Wolverines 10-6 on Saturday at the Brown Invitational. The win gives 'Wick the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division regular season title.

It is the first win over Michigan since 2009. The four-goal margin of victory is also the largest ever for the Hawks over the Wolverines.

After the Wolverines took the 2-0 lead in the first frame, Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) answered back for Hartwick with two scores to even the contest up at 2-2. Allison Kosich (Stockton, CA) added a score to give 'Wick the lead midway through the period and Sasha Freeborn (Auckland, New Zealand) scored to put the Hawks up 4-2 at the end of the quarter. In the second period, Michigan scored at 6:25 to narrow the Hawk lead to 4-3 and the score stood that way at halftime as both teams played stingy defense.

Capparelli would net the hat trick early in the third quarter to give Hartwick back its two-goal advantage. The teams traded goals back and forth and the game was 6-5 in Hartwick's favor heading into the final period.

In the final frame, Capparelli converted the six on five advantage to move Hartwick ahead 7-5 at 6:42. Freeborn then scored on the five meter kick-out and the Hawks went ahead 8-5. 'Wick scored two more times and nearly shutout Michigan in the quarter until the Wolverines scored with one second left in the game.

Capparelli scored five goals on the day. Freeborn notched a pair of scores. Kosich, Britt Tait (Kairong, Australia), and Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) all scored once.

Hartwick ended its day with a match against #3 Arizona State. The Hawks were looking to avenge their 12-3 loss to the Sun Devils on March 25. 'Wick kept it close but ultimately fell to ASU 10-7.

Capparelli paced the Hawks with three goals. Ermakova added a pair of scores. Lily Martinez (Commerce, CA) and Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) both scored once.

ASU led 2-1 midway through the first quarter. The Sun Devils scored twice in the second quarter to go up 4-1 but the Hawks cut that lead in half and the score stood at 4-2 at halftime in favor of ASU.

Arizona State made it 5-2 early in the third quarter. Dendy Young answered back for the Hawks to narrow the deficit to just two goals at 5-3. The Sun Devils ended the third frame with two scores to move ahead 8-4.

In the fourth quarter, Capparelli scored a goal on the five-meter kickout to make it an 8-5 game.  ASU widened its lead to 10-5 with 4:13 remaining on the game clock. The Hawks rallied to score twice more in the final minutes but came up just short in the end.

Hartwick will face CSU-Bakersfield on the final day of competition tomorrow. Game time will be at 11:15 a.m.
