Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) dropped a season-high 36 points to lead the Hartwick men's basketball as the Hawks led from start to finsh as they defeated visiting Houghton 96-82 on Saturday afternoon at Lambros Arena. Winners of three straight games, Hartwick is now 10-6 overall while Houghton falls to 3-12.
Suderley shot 7-of-14 from the floor and was a perfect 21-of-21 from the free throw line. He also added 17 rebounds for his eighth double-double game of the season and dished out four assists. "Jared was great and showed be why he was a preseason All-American," said head coach
Todd McGuinness.
Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) was also 7-of-14 in field goals which included going 4-of-6 from behind the three-point arc for 19 points.
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
The Hawks were in control from the beginning as they raced out to a 13-0 lead at 16:47 of the first half. The Highlanders did not register their first basket of the game until the 15:03 mark when Andrew Makori was good on a jumper. The 'Wick lead grew to as much as 27 points, 33-6, at 10:15.
Hartwick led 40-20 with 5:21 left to play in the first half. Houghton started to chip away at the 'Wick lead as a 19-13 run to close out the period would reduce the Hawks' advantage to just 14 points, 53-39, at halftime. The Highlanders were a hot 8-of-12 from beyond the three-point arc to fuel the comeback bid.
The Highlanders stayed with the Hawks in the second half as they closed to within 11 points, 59-48, at 17:04. It would be as close as Houghton would get as Hartwick kept its distance from the visitors throughout the half. After a hot shooting first half, Houghton went cold in three pointers as it shot 1-of-9 in the second period.
'Wick dominated in nearly every facet of the game. It had a 40-28 lead in points in the paint, 19-9 advantage in second chance points, and 48-28 advantage on the glass.
Despite the victory Houghton had the better shooting percentage (47.2% to Hartwick's 45.5%). The Highlanders shot 9-of-21 (42.9%) in three point attempts to Hartwick's 8-of-22 (36.4%). Aided by Suderley's perfect day at the line, the Hawks as a team converted 28-of-33 foul shots (84.8%) to 23-of-36 (63.9%) for the Highlanders.
"It was another good team performance on offense," remarked McGuinness. "We got out to a good start and kept Houghton away for most of the game."
With 17 rebounds, Suderley now has 790 in his career. He moves past Dave Versocki (1986-1990) for second place all-time.
Makori led the Highlanders with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting and hit five three-point shots. Tyler McQuaid added 14 points and five rebounds. Brennen Campbell came off the bench and scored 13 points while picking up five rebounds and five assists. Matthew Ball scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Hartwick heads on the road for its next contest. The Hawks will face Utica next Friday night at 6 p.m.
