PROVIDENCE, RI- The #19 ranked Hartwick water polo team began its 2014 season on Saturday at the Brown Invitational. The Hawks dropped their first game of the day to Wagner, 10-8, and succumbed to #13 Indiana University 11-5 in the nightcap.
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) led the Hawks with five goals.
Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) added two scores.
Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) tallied one score.
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) had six saves in the cage.
Wagner was had a trio of goals from Jess Lundgren. Lily Doerfler and Megan Rodriguez both scored twice. Amanda Sutherland, Sidney Hoshko, and Jessica Burdge each had one goal. Emily Riddle stopped eight shots in the cage.
The Seahawks went up 1-0 when Doerfler netted the first goal of the game. Hartwick countered with two goals from Dendy Young and then Wagner's Jessica Burdge tied the game at 2-2 with her lone goal of the game midway through the first.
The game went back and forth throughout the second with both teams finding the net three times, sending the game to halftime tied 5-5. Lundgren had two of her team-high three goals in the frame, while Rodriguez was able to find the net once.
In the third quarter, Wagner was able to make a run on the Hawks, scoring four goals, and 'Wick was unable to answer back. Doerfler and Rodriguez along with Hoshko and Sutherland all scored in the third, ending the quarter up 9-5.
Hartwick trailed 10-5 in the beginning of the fourth and final period. 'Wick mounted a rally and was able to add three goals in the frame but fell short in the end.
Against the Hoosiers,
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) led the Hawks with two scores.
Stephanie El Safty (Sydney, Australia),
Britt Tait (Kariong, Australia), and Ermakova all netted one goal each. Davies had one save in goal.
Indiana was led by Shae Fournier's four goals. Summer Creighton and Coleen McNaught both scored twice. Rebecca Gerrity, Emily Milstead, and Allison Campbell all tallied on goal apiece. Jessican Gaudreault turned away eight shots in the cage.
The Hawks trailed 7-0 after two quarters of play. Hartwick finally got on the board at 6:25 of the third period on a goal by Tait. The two teams exchanged scores for the remainder of the frame and 'Wick trailed 9-3. Goals would also be shared in the final stanza as the Hoosiers maintained their six goal advantage.
Hartwick returns to action tomorrow with a 9:15 a.m. match against #20 University of the Pacific. The Hawks will wrap up competition with a 2:15 p.m. match versus Marist.
