Water Polo Handles George Washington and Bucknell at Bison Invitational

Cayley Tonkin scored five times, dished out five assists, and had four steals on the day.
LEWISBURG, PA- Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town South Africa) and Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) both scored four goals to lead the Hartwick water polo team to a 15-6 victory over George Washington University at the Bison Invitational on Saturday. Tonkin and Dendy Young also came away with three steals in the game.

Devon Boyle (Sydney, Australia) and Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) had a pair of scores. Boyle also dished out three assists while Ermakova had three steals. Britt Tait (Kariong, Australia), Ricci Ferigo (Auckland New Zealand), and Anniek Hendriks (Amersfoort, Netherlands) all scored once.

Michaela Davies (Cronulla,Australia) stopped five shots in the cage for the Hawks. She also had one assist. Katja Rocha (Miami, FL) played one quarter and had a save and a steal.

Hartwick built a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. The Hawk advantage grew to 7-1 on Hendriks' score at 6:11 of the second period. Back to back goals from the Colonials narrowed the score to 7-3 at 3:42. Two more Wick goals to close out the stanza restored the Hartwick lead to six goals, 9-3. at the end of the quarter. The Hawks outscored the GWU 6-3 in the second half to come away with the victory.

Nine Hawks got into the scoring column as Hartwick defeated the host Bison 13-6 in the afternoon match. The win gives the Hawks are record of 6-5 and moves them above .500 for the first time this season.

Tait, Hendriks, Dendy Young, and Ermakova all scored a pair of goals. Tait also assisted on two scores. Dendy Young came away with a game-high eight steals.

Stephanie El Safty (Sydney, Australia), Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa), and Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) scored one time. Tonkin tallied one goal, five assists, and one steal. Ferigo had a goal, two assists, and three steals.

Davies blocked seven shots in the cage. She also had one steal and one assist.

The Hawks held a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The 'Wick lead increased to 6-0 with 6:09 to play in the second frame. Bucknell scored twice in 37 seconds to narrow the Hartwick advantage to 6-2. The Hawks would regain their six goal lead at the end of the quarter as they went up 9-3.

In the third quarter, the Hawks held Bucknell scoreless as they went ahead 11-3. The Bison outscored 'Wick 3-2 in the final frame with the outcome already well decided.

Hartwick returns to action tomorrow morning with two matches. The Hawks face #20 Michigan at 9:15 a.m. followed by Marist at 11:45 a.m.
