Hartwick Water Polo Outlasts Michigan in Overtime

Lara Dendy Young had 2 goals, two assists, and two steals for Hartwick in two wins.
LEWISBURG, PA- The Hartwick and Michigan water polo teams, who were both tied for 20th in the latest CWPA poll, battled in a tight contest at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday. The Wolverines forced extra sessions but the Hawks scored once in each overtime period to come away with a 12-10 victory. It was also Hartwick's first CWPA win of the season.

'Wick never trailed in the contest. The game was tied four times and the Hawks' advantage was never more than two goals.

Hartwick took a 9-8 lead on Lara Dendy Young's (Cape Town, South Africa) first and only goal of the day with 59 seconds left to play in the third quarter. The Hawks held the advantage until 4:56 remaining in the fourth period when Michigan's Pressley Pender scored to even the contest up a 9-9. Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) restored the one-goal lead to the Hawks just 46 ticks later. The Hawks were poised the win the game until Pender's second goal of the stanza with two seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime.

In the first overtime, Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) scored at 2:09 to put Hartwick ahead 11-10. Sami Capparelli's (Miami, FL) score at 2:04 of the second overtime increased the Hawk lead to 12-10 where the score stood as Michigan did not have an answer.

Capparelli led Hartwick with three goals and also came away with one steal. Tonkin scored two times and had a game-high four steals. Ermakova scored twice, dished out two assists, and had two steals. Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) finished with two goals and two steals. Devon Boyle (Sydney, Australia) scored once and had three assists. Lara Dendy Young and Ricci Ferigo (Auckland, New Zealand) both had one goal each. Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) had 13 saves in the cage for the Hawks.

The second match of morning was also a close affair but the Hawks held off Marist, 9-8. Ermakova led Hartwick with four goals and added an assist and a steal. Jemma Dendy Young and Capparelli both contributed two goals each. Lara Dendy Young scored once, assisted on two other scores, and picked up a steal. Tonkin dished out two assists and had two steals. Boyle totaled three assists and two steals. Davies tallied eight saves and an assist in the cage.

The Red Foxes took a 1-0 lead with a little less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter. 'Wick would score three straight times to move ahead 3-1 at the 28 second mark before Marist tacked on a second goal with two seconds left to make it 3-2 Hartwick.

Two goals early in the second frame gave the Hawks their biggest lead of game, 5-2, at 5:38. The Red Foxes rallied to score three times and tie the contest up at 5-5 at the end of the half.

The score was knotted up a 7-7 after Marist's Yuriria Chavez scored at 6:01. Goals by Capparelli at 4:29 and Ermakova at 1:01 put the Hawks up 9-7. Brooke Else's goal with 33 ticks on the game clock got the Red Foxes to within one goal but it was not enough as Hartwick held on for the win.

After a perfect 4-0 weekend, Hartwick returns home to host Brown and Marist next Saturday at Moyer Pool. Game time between the Hawks and Bears will be at 11 a.m. The Hawks and Red Foxes will battle at 6 p.m.
