Hartwick Water Polo Defeats Brown 17-10 at Moyer Pool

Jemma Dendy Young and Sami Capparelli totaled 11 goals on the day to lead Hartwick.
ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick water polo team hosted Brown University on Saturday morning at Moyer Pool. The Bears got to within one goal of tying the game in the third quarter, but the Hawks outscored the visitors 8-2 the rest of the way as they secured a 17-10 victory. 'Wick, winners of seven straight contests, improve to 9-5 overall while Brown falls to 2-4.

Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) led the Hawks with six goals. She also assisted on another and had three steals and 2 drawn kick-outs. Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) tallied five goals and one assist. Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) chipped in two goals, two assists, three steals, and three drawn kick-outs.

Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) scored once and dished out a game-high five assists. Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa) contributed one goal, three assists, and two steals. Britt Tait (Kariong, Austrailia) and Devon Boyle (Sydney, Austrailia) also scored once on the day. Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) blocked nine shots in the cage and also had one steal for Hartwick.

The Bears were led by Emily McNamara and Marisa Kolokotronis' three goals. Kate Woods scored twice. Emma Todd and Victoria Pierotti chipped in one goal each.

Hartwick struck first at the 7:24 mark of the first quarter on Jemma Dendy Young's first score of the day. The Bears would tie it up at 1-all at 6:01 but a 5-2 'Wick run to close out the quarter gave the home team a 6-3 advantage at the end of the first period.

The second quarter saw the Hawks score first to go up 7-3 at 6:13. Hartwick still had a four goal lead, 9-5, after Boyle's tally. Brown put up two more scores to trail 9-7 at halftime.

The Bears continued their momentum into the third stanza as Woods hit the back of the cage to make it a 9-8 game. The Hawks started to pull away with scores from Ermakova and Jemma Dendy Young to go up 11-8 at 4:31. Brown narrowed the deficit to two scores at 2:05, but two more goals from the Hawks left Hartwick up 13-9 at the end of the third quarter.

It was all Hawks in the final stanza as Hartwick outscored Brown 4-1. Jemma Dendy Young and Capparelli both tacked on a pair of goals as the Hawks pulled away from the Bears and took the victory.

'Wick will next compete at the Harvard Invite March 8 and 9. The Hawks will play Princeton at 9:15 a.m. and Wagner at 2:15 p.m. on the 8th and face Brown again on the 9th at 3:30 p.m.
