Tait’s Four Goals Leads ’Wick Water Polo Past Sonoma State, 16-9

Britt Tait scored four goals to lead the Hawks to victory over Sonoma State.
LA JOLLA, CA- Britt Tait (Kariong, Austrailia) scored four goals as the Hartwick water polo team outscored Sonoma State 7-3 in the second half to win 16-9 in the first of two games on the second day of competition at the UC Triton Invite. A total of 10 Hawks got into the scoring column in the game.

Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) tallied three goals while Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) added two scores for 'Wick. Lily Gall (Portland, OR), Stephanie El Safty (Sydney, Australia), Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL), Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa), Devon Boyle (Sydney, Australia), Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town South Africa), and Ricci Fergio (Auckland, New Zealand) all scored one goal each.

The Seawolves were led by Jessica Stansfield's three goals. Noelle Herrera had a pair of scores. Caitlin Risden, Tessa de Recat, Jessica Becker, and Lexii Morabito had one goal apiece.

The Hawks took the lead at 5:19 of the first quarter on Ermakova's first score of the game. The Seawolves would tie it up just 10 seconds later and after Hartwick tacked on two more goals to go up 3-1, Sonoma State scored with 1:34 remaining in the period to make it a 3-2 contest.

'Wick still had a one goal advantage, 6-5, with 3:12 to play in the second stanza. Goals from Capparelli, El Safty, and Ermakova pushed Hartwick's lead to 9-5 at 1:16. Following a timeout, the Seawolves scored with two seconds showing on the clock as the Hawks held on to a 9-6 lead at the end of the first half.

It was all Hawks as Hartwick held the Seawolves scoreless in the third frame and scored five times to extend its lead to 14-6. Jemma Dendy Young's goal to begin the fourth quarter increased the 'Wick lead to 15-6. Sonoma State would outscore the Hawks 3-2 for the remainder of the period but ultimately fell short as Hartwick came away victorious.

In the afternoon match against Marist, the Hawks broke a 2-2 tie in the first period as they outscored the Red Foxes 8-1 the rest of the way for a 10-3 victory. With two wins on the day, Hartwick improves its record to 4-5 overall.

Capparelli led the way for 'Wick with three goals. Jemma Dendy Young and Ermakova both contributed a pair of scores each. Tonkin, Tait, and Boyle all scored once.

Hartwick struck first at 6:53 of the first period on a goal from Ermakova. The two teams exchanged goals back and forth and the score stood at 2-2 at the end of one quarter of play.

The Hawks regained the lead at with 6:13 on the game clock in the second stanza on Ermakova's second goal. Marist again would net the equalizer just under two minutes later. It was as close as the Red Foxes got as Hartwick shut them out and outscored Marist 7-0 the rest of the way.

'Wick returns to the East Coast and travels to Lewisburg, PA next weekend to compete in the Bucknell Tournament. The Hawks will face George Washington University on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. followed by the host Bison at 4:45 p.m.
