Hawks Fall to Farmingdale State, 12-7

Cody Ciolino had two goals for the Hawks against Farmingdale State.

FARMINGDALE, NY- The visiting Hartwick men's lacrosse team rallied to make it a one-goal game midway through the third period but host Farmingdale State outscored the Hawks 6-2 the rest of the way to come out with a 12-7 victory on Saturday afternoon. 'Wick is now 0-3 to start the season while the Rams improve to 2-2.

Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset) and Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) both scored a pair of goals to lead Hartwick. Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North), Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), and Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) all had one goal each. Gropper and Vaglica also assisted on two goals.

Only one goal was scored in the first quarter which was by Farmingdale's Tyler Rifice. The Hawks evened it up at 1-1 on a Ciolino unassisted goal. Rifice responded for the Rams with his second score of the day to put Farmingdale State ahead by one. 'Wick again had an answer on a Petillo unassisted goal. The Rams ended the second quarter on a 3-0 run to go ahead 5-2 at halftime.

In the third frame, a slashing penalty by Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) gave the Rams a man-up opportunity that they would take advantage of as Ryan McArdle cashed in to put FSU ahead 6-2 at 13:26. The Hawks began to chip away at the lead with three straight goals, including two man-up scores from Gropper, to get to within 6-5 at 7:29.

The Rams scored their seventh goal of the day 23 seconds later and maintained the two-score advantage for nearly six minutes of the period. Riffice scored once at 1:41 and a second time at 1:20 to make it 9-5. Ciolino's goal at 1:02 narrowed it to 9-6.

It was all Farmingdale in the final quarter as the Rams scored three times to put the game out of reach. Simmons scored the game's last goal with 4:43 left to play to complete the scoring.

Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) got the nod in goal for the Hawks and stopped 13 shots. Thomas Fallo started for the Rams and had five saves in the first half. Nicholas Fasano relieved him in the second half and had six saves.

Farmingdale led in shots, 37-27, and in groundballs, 46-27. Kevin Rourke, Petillo, Geoff Baptiste (North Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford), and Taylor Lee (Germantown, NY/ Red Hook) all had four groundballs each to lead 'Wick. Baptiste also had a team-high three caused turnovers.

Hartwick returns home to face SUNY Cobleskill on Monday afternoon. Game time from Wright Stadium will be at 4 p.m.
