LOS ANGELES, CA- The Hartwick water polo team led from from start to finish as it defeated Pomona Pitzer 12-7 and Whittier College 14-7 at the Loyola Marymount Invitational on Saturday. The Hawks have now won five games in a row to improve to 14-7 on the season.
Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) scored three times to lead the Hawks.
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) and
Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) tacked on a pair of scores.
Stephanie El Safty (Sydney, Austrailia),
Ricci Ferigo (Auckland, New Zealand),
Devon Boyle (Sydney, Australia),
Cayley Tonkin (Cape Town, South Africa), and
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) all scored once.
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) stopped five shots in the cage.
The Sagehens got two goals from Mahalia Prater-Fahey. Alyssa Woodward, Sarah Westcott, Megan Snow, Chrissie Alving-Trinh, and Christina Williamson had one goal each. Sallie Walecka blocked 13 shots in goal.
Hartwick got out to a 5-0 lead at 5:21 of the second quarter. The Sagehens got one back but the Hawks added another score by Ermakova. Pomona-Pitzer would score the last goal of the period as 'Wick went into halftime up 6-2.
The third stanza saw the Hawks lead by as much as 10-3 at 2:34. The Sagehens would chip away at the Hartwick lead with two scores and trailed 10-5 heading into the final frame. The two teams would trade goals in the fourth quarter as 'Wick would win by five.
The Hawks faced Whittier College in the second game of the day. Hartwick led 4-0 in the first quarter on its way to a 14-7 victory.
Ermakova led the way with five goals. Boyle added a hat trick. Lara and
Jemma Dendy Young had a pair of scores. Tonkin and
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa) both scored once. Davies had seven saves in goal.
Jae Crabtree scored three goals to lead Whittier. Laurel Pinkley, Cynthia Castillo, Jenel Rivera and Isabella Gorrocino all had a score each. Mattie Winkler stopped nine shots in the cage.
It was 4-0 Hartwick in the first period before the Poets scored their first goal of the game with 24 seconds remaining in the quarter. Whittier cut into the deficit at 5:08 with a goal to make it 4-2 in favor of Hartwick. 'Wick would go on to lead 6-3 at halftime.
It was all Hawks in the second half as Hartwick went on a 7-1 run covering the third and fourth periods to go up 13-4 with 5:52 remaining in the final quarter. The Poets scored the last two goals of the game with the game well in Hartwick's favor.
Hartwick will next head to Northridge, CA to face the #7 Matadors tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m PST. The Hawks then play Concordia University at 3 p.m. PST.
