NORTHRIDGE, CA- Hartwick water polo coach
Alan Huckins recorded his 300th win for the Hawks in the squad's 15-8 win over Concordia on Sunday. Huckins now has amassed a record of 300-114 while piloting the Hawks and has led the program to 25-wins or better in each of his previous 10 seasons.
In the team's first game of the day, Hartwick nearly had its second win over a top ranked opponent in three days as it led #7 Cal-State Northridge 6-4 at halftime. The Matadors, however, fought back and broke a tie game in the fourth period with three straight scores to pull away and defeat the Hawks 12-10 on Sunday.
Sami Capparelli (Miami, FL) scored the first of her five goals to give 'Wick an early 1-0 lead at the 7:21 mark of the first period. Fourteen seconds later, Lindsy Duncan scored for the Matadors to tie the game at 1-1. At the 3:30 mark of the first period,
Devon Boyle (Sydney, Austrailia) put the Hawks in front again at 2-1. Katie Kammer and Molly Henehan pushed CSUN in front 3-2 but with only one second left in the first period, Capparelli tied the game at 3-3. Two more goals by Capparelli helped Hartwick build its 6-4 halftime advantage.
The Matadors tied the game in the third period on goals by Melissa Doll and Kelcie Ferreira. 'Wick moved in front on
Cayley Tonkin's (Cape Town, South Africa) score, but Northridge came back with a 7-7 tying goal by Marisa Young at 4:22. With 29 seconds remaining in the third period, Henehan scored her second goal of the game to give CSUN an 8-7 lead.
The Hawks wouldn't back down. Capparelli scored to tie the game at 8-8 with 6:53 to play in the fourth period. Henehan's third goal of the game gave CSUN a 9-8 advantage with 6:37 remaining. Hartwick refused to fold as
Katie Ermakova (Columbia, MD) scored at the 5:23 mark to tie the game, 9-9.
In a 2:34 span starting at the 4:56 mark of the fourth quarter, Doll, Ferreira and Young each scored a goal to give the Matadors a little breathing room at 12-9. Tonkin's score with just over a minute left brought the Hawks to within two, but Hartwick would not find the back of the cage again as Northridge pulled out the victory.
Capparelli led the way for the Hawks with five goals. Tonkin had a pair of scores. Boyle. Ermakova, and
Britt Tait (Kariong, Australia) all scored once.
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Austrailia) had five saves in goal.
Henehan and Young both scored three times for the Matadors. Doll and Ferreira had two goals apiece. Duncan and Kammer contributed one score. Kiernan Davis produced 12 saves in the cage.
In Hartwick's second match of the day, the Hawks led 7-1 early in the second quarter against Concordia.
Anniek Hendriks (Amersfoort, Netherlands) netted a hat trick to lead the offense for 'Wick. Ermakova, Tait, Capparelli,
Jemma Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), and
Stephanie El Safty (Sydney, Austraila) all scored twice. Boyle had one goal. Davies had 10 saves.
Meg Dix had three goals to lead the Eagles. Jaime Breen and Tayla Walsh tallied two scores apiece. Brooke Roy contributed one score. MacKenzie Kuran stopped three shots in goal.
Concordia chipped away at the Hawk lead in the third quarter as a pair of goals from Dix reduced the Hartwick advantage to 10-5 with 2:54 remaining. Wick would build its lead up to seven, 12-5, on goals from Capparelli and Dendy Young. The teams traded off on goals for the remainder of the period as the Hawks came out victors.
Hartwick has a tough task ahead of it when it faces defending national champion, current #1, and undefeated the University of Southern California on Thursday. Game time from the Uytengsu Aquatics Center will be at 5 p.m. local time.
