ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick men's tennis played several competitive matches but ultimately fell by a 9-0 score to visiting St. John Fisher on Saturday at Hartwick Courts.
Hartwick came close at first doubles as
Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson) and
Will Gilbraith (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore) played evenly with Cardinals Pat McGrath and Sheldon Mitchell. Both pairs won six games before McGrath and Mitchell took the last two for an 8-6 win.
In singles, Gilbraith played a three-setter with Mitchell at the second flight. After Mitchell won the first set, 6-4, Gilbraith came back to take the second set, 6-2 to force a super tie-break. Mitchell would outlast Gilbraith 10 points to six in the third for the victory.
At first singles, Redder came close to forcing a third set in his match against McGrath. He dropped the first set, 6-1, but battled to force a tie-break in the second set. McGrath, however, would win the race to seven points, 7-3, to claim the win.
At fifth singles,
Jefferson Monastoque (Heredia, Costa Rica/Blue Valley) lost narrowly in a first set tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-5), to Adam Moran. The duo played a super tie-break in the second set where Moran prevailed, 10-5.
The Hawks are now 2-11 on the year. They finish the conference slate with a record of 1-6. 'Wick wraps up the 2014 season Tuesday with a home match against Union College.
