ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick sophomore Jefferson Monastoque (Heredia, Costa Rica/Blue Valley HS) scored a marathon three-set victory at fifth singles to earn his first collegiate win in an 8-1 defeat to Alfred University (9-6, 1-1 E8) on Sunday.
Monastoque fought off seven match points in the deciding set against Alfred's Eric Teller to claim the victory. He took the first set, 6-3, before Teller came back to even the match in the second set, 6-2, to set up a race to 10 points for the victory.
Teller gained the upper hand and had seven chances to close out the match, but Monastoque had an answer on each point. Finally after gaining a 13-12 edge, Monastoque won the deciding point to secure the hard-fought win.
Junior Will Gilbraith (West Monroe, NY/Paul V. Moore) and freshman Ross Braue (Canastota, NY/Canastota) each won seven games in their respective singles matches.
Gilbraith dropped the first set of his match at second singles with Peter Benoit before narrowly getting edged out in the second set, 7-5. Braue dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the sixth flight to Alfred's Matt Baloga.
Hartwick (0-6, 0-3 E8) next plays on Wednesday at city-rival Oneonta State. The Hawks and Red Dragons are slated for a 4 p.m. start.
