RIVERSIDE, CA – Nationally 20
th ranked Hartwick lost a pair of games at the Cal-Baptist Mini Lancer Invite on Saturday to slip to 1-2 on the season. The Hawks lost to #19 CSU Bakersfield 8-4 and to the host Lancers 11-6.
Against the Roadrunners, the two teams were tied at 4-4 at the end of three quarters, but CSU Bakersfield outscored the Hawks 4-0 in the pivotal fourth quarter to come away with the victory.
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand),
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa),
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia), and
Blanca Anton Cuesta (Madrid, Spain) each scored for Hartwick in the game.
Hartwick took the lead 4:37 into the first quarter on a McKenty tally but CSU Bakersfield answered right back with a goal of its own 17 seconds later. They took a 2-1 lead with 1:29 left on a Lauren Paulson strike.
Nicole Barrett's second goal of the game made it 3-1 Roadrunners before Traube scored Hartwick's second goal and the Hawks hit halftime down 3-2. Goalkeeper
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) would stop 13 shots for the Hawks in the first two periods.
The Roadrunners scored the first goal of the third quarter for a 4-2 edge. Tait responded for 'Wick to pull to within one and Anton Cuesta evened the match with her goal with 1:43 remaining in the quarter.
Another Barrett goal put CSU Baskersfield on top to stay at the 6:55 mark of the fourth quarter. Three minutes later, the Roadrunners got an insurance goal from Kristen Jensen. Janelle Shelby and Jensen then tacked on two more at 3:01 and 2:18 to put the game away.
Davies would end the match with 21 saves for the Hawks. Courtney Wahlstrom made five saves in the Roadrunner cage.
In the nightcap against the Lancers, Tait and Anton Cuesta combined for five goals for the Hawks with
Rebecca Armstrong (Pasadena CA) registering the other Hartwick tally.
Hartwick held a 4-2 lead in the second quarter but the Lancers would outscore the Hawks 9-2 the rest of the way for the win.
'Wick took 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first quarter on Anton Cuesta and Tait tallies. Tait put the Hawks up 3-1 and Anton Cuesta made it 4-2 with 44 seconds left. Cal-Baptist would strike with 24 ticks remaining and Hartwick went into halftime up 4-3.
Two Lancer goals in the first three and a half minutes of the third quarter handed the hosts their first lead of the match at 5-4. Tait answered with 3:01 left to even the score at 5-5 but the Lancers went in front to stay with 48 seconds left in the quarter.
Cal-Baptist got some breathing room with two goals in the first minute of the fourth quarter for an 8-5 edge. They added two more tallies 1:09 apart for a 10-5 edge and recorded their eleventh goal with 2:32 remaining. Armstrong closed out the scoring with 1:25 to go.
Davies ended the match with 13 saves for the Hawks. Meghan Rowland stopped 10 Hartwick shots for the Lancers.
Hannah Evans led the way for Cal-Baptist with four goals. Paizlee Dreyer and Valerie Spezzaferri each scored twice.
Hartwick is back in action tomorrow against #11 Cal Northridge. Game time is 10 a.m. PST.
