ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick Hawks (8-1, 5-0) dropped their first match of the season to SUNY Oneonta by a final score of 3-6 on Thursday. The loss ends Hartwick's streak of eight straight wins to start the season.
Hartwick was able to capture a win in doubles as
Heidi Rice (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus-Whitman) and
Rose Natoli (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) teamed up at first doubles winning 8-5.
The Hawks were edged in three matches that all went to tiebreakers, which proved to be the difference in the match.
Caitlin O'Brien (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) and
Kelli Ryan (Plattsburgh, NY/Seton Catholic) were outlasted at third doubles losing 9-8 (7-4). Natoli and O'Brien both forced a third set but lost in the tiebreakers at second and fifth singles, respectively.
Two Hawks were able to stay undefeated on the season with both winning in straight sets.
Kelly Napolitano (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) won 6-2, 6-2 over Michelle Halpern at third singles to improve to 8-0 on the season. Ryan was also able to stay perfect winning at sixth singles 6-4, 6-3.
The Hawks return to action
this Saturday as they look to stay perfect in conference play against Stevens at home.
