Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand) scored 11 goals on the day to lead Hartwick's water polo team to a pair of wins at the Bucknell Bison Invitational at Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg, PA on Saturday. McKenty registered a career-high eight goals to lead the Hawks to a 16-4 victory over Notre Dame College (OH) in the team's first game of the CWPA season. She then scored a game-high three goals in a 9-7 victory over twentieth ranked Marist.
Against Notre Dame, Hartwick led 6-2 after the first period of play. The Hawks erupted for seven straight goals for a 13-2 advantage at the half before cruising in the second half.
After the Falcons took an early 1-0 lead, the Hawks would score the next five goals of the first quarter. McKenty would tally three times in a 1:10 span.
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT),
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia), and
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa) also scored in the quarter for the Hawks.
In the second, McKenty netted the Hawks' first two and last two goals of the period. Tait,
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia), and Mihajlovik also scored as the Hawks opened up an 11-goal margin.
Rebecca Armstrong (Pasadena, CA) and McKenty scored the two Hartwick goals in the third quarter and Mihajlovik closed out the 'Wick scoring in the fourth.
In the second game of the day, the Hawks and Red Foxes traded leads in the first quarter before settling on a 2-2 deadlock. McKenty and Mihajlovic registered the Hartwick goals.
The Hawks took control in the second quarter scoring three unanswered goals for a 5-2 advantage at halftime.
Blanca Anton Cuesta (Madrid, Spain) scored twice with McKenty adding her second.
After McKenty extended the Hawks' edge to four goals, 6-2, 1:12 into the third quarter, Marist stormed back with four unanswered tallies in a 3:25 span to draw even at 6-6.
Goals from Tait at 59 seconds and Brennan at 29 seconds salvaged the quarter and gave the Hawks an 8-6 lead heading into the final frame. Traube tacked on another insurance goal in the fourth period to push the lead to three before the Foxes got one back with 41 ticks left in the match for the final 9-7 score.
With the win, the Hawks (4-8) improve to 27-1 all-time against Marist. They face the host Bison tomorrow at 8 a.m. and the Siena Saints at 3:30 p.m.
