LEWISBURG, PA – The 19
th ranked Hartwick water polo team swept two matches on Sunday to finish a perfect 4-0 at the Bucknell Bison Invitational. The Hawks opened the day with a 13-7 victory over the host Bison and they wrapped up the tournament with an 18-4 win over Siena. 'Wick improves to 6-8 overall on the season.
Sophomore
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary) led Hartwick against the Bison with five goals. Senior
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa) and freshman
Blanca Anton Cuesta (Madrid, Spain) each scored twice.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal from Polak. Anton Cuesta registered a pair of goals with
Natalie May (Huntington Beach, CA) and Polak also tallying in the second as Hartwick took a 5-2 advantage into halftime.
The Bison narrowed the gap to two, 6-4, with a little over five minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Hawks outscored them 4-1 the rest of the period to earn a 10-5 lead. Polak scored a trio of goals in the quarter with
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia) and
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT) also finding the net.
'Wick would outscore Bucknell 3-2 in the final period for the five-goal victory. Traub
e scored twice with
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand) also tallying.
In the Hawks' second match of the day against the Saints, Hartwick erupted for eight goals in the second period to open up an 11-2 lead at halftime. They continued to roll in the second half, outscoring Siena by a 7-2 margin for the 14-goal victory.
Mihajlovik, who ended the match with a career-high seven goals, recorded the Hawks' first four goals in the contest. McKenty earned four tallies, while
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia) netted three and Traube registered two. Polak and May added the other two Hartwick scores.
Anton Cuesta, Brennan, Traube, Tait, and Polak each picked up three assists against the Saints.
Josette Santos (Huntington Beach, CA) played all 32 minutes in goal for the Hawks. She made 10 saves in the game.
The Hawks are on the road next weekend in a trio of matches. They travel to Wagner and Iona on Saturday, February 21 before heading to Marist on Sunday.
