NEW YORK, NY – Twentieth ranked Hartwick (6-9) lost a 16-15 decision to #17 Wagner on Saturday at Spiro Sports Center in New York City. The loss snaps the Hawks' four-game winning streak.
Freshman
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT) and sophomore
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary) scored four goals apiece to pace Hartwick. Freshman
Blanca Anton Cuesta (Madrid, Spain) contributed three goals on the day.
The Hawks held a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Mihajlovik and Anton Cuesta in the opening two minutes before four straight Seahawk tallies gave the hosts the lead. They held onto it through the opening eight minutes and led 5-3.
The Hawks battled back and goals from Anton Cuesta, Mihajlovik and Polak to even the score at 6-6 before a Wagner tally with 13 seconds left made it 7-6 at halftime.
The Seahawks would outscore Hartwick 6-4 in the third quarter to take a 13-10 advantage heading into the final period. Polak found the net twice with Anton Cuesta and Mihajlovic also scoring for 'Wick.
With less than three minutes left in the match, Wagner led by a 15-12 margin. Polak and Mihajlovic goals pulled the Hawks to within one, 15-14, with 1:44 to play, but the Seahawks got an insurance goal 19 seconds later.
The Hawks drew a late exclusion and
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia) scored with five ticks remaining to make it a one-goal game but the Seahawks kept possession and ran out the clock for the win.
Hartwick has a pair of games tomorrow, both taking place at Marist. 'Wick plays the Red Foxes at 3 p.m. following a neutral site game against the Iona Gaels at 6 p.m.
