TEMPE, AZ – Hartwick defeated Redlands 17-6 and were beaten by #13 Indiana 9-6 on Saturday at Mona Plummer Aquatics Center in Tempe, AZ. The Hawks are competing at the 2015 ASU Water Polo Invitational.
In the opener, the Hawks out-scored the Bulldogs 8-1 in the second half to earn their fourth consecutive victory. After a 1-1 tie in the first quarter,
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT) tallied with 3:40 left to put the Hawks up to stay. Reigning CWPA Player of the Week
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary) registered four first-half goals with Mihajlovik adding two for a 9-5 lead at the intermission.
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) took over in the second half with four goals to send the Hawks to the victory.
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia) and
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand) each added two goals in the half in the 17-6 triumph.
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa),
Natalie May (Huntington Beach, CA), and
Rebecca Armstrong (Pasadena, CA) also scored for 'Wick.
Against the Hoosiers, Mihajlovik gave the Hawks the early lead 40 seconds from the opening sprint. Indiana would score the final two goals of the quarter and they added two more early in the second period to open up a 4-1 advantage.
Mihajlovik and Polak responded with goals to cut the deficit to 4-3 midway through the quarter. The Hoosiers extended their edge to three at halftime with two consecutive goals.
A Polak tally made it a 7-4 game in the third quarter, but two more Hoosier goals made it 9-4 heading into the final period. Polak tallied her third of the game at 6:34 and Mihajlovik netted her third 1:59 later to put the score at 9-6, but the scoring ended there in the three-goal loss for the Hawks.
Hartwick, now 12-16 overall, continues play tomorrow at ASU. The Hawks oppose #15 Long Beach State and # 9 San Jose State.
