BLOOMINGTON, IN – The Hawks of Hartwick College played the fifth ranked team in the nation to a one-goal game through the first half but UC Irvine would out-score 'Wick 8-2 the rest of the way in a 14-7 win.
Blanca Anton Cuesta (Madrid, Spain) scored four times to pace Hartwick.
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa),
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT), and
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand) each added a goal.
After falling behind by two goals in the first quarter, the Hawks fought back to tie the game twice in the second period. Mihajlovik evened the score at 4-4 at 6:25, and Anton Cuesta made it a 5-5 game with 2:13 left in the half. The Anteaters went on top with six seconds remaining for a 6-5 lead at the intermission.
Irvine scored the first two goals of the third quarter but McKenty's tally brought it to 9-7 after 24 minutes. The Anteaters would score five times in the fourth to pull away.
Hartwick drops to 8-14 overall with the result. The Hawks host Villanova, Siena, and Brown next Saturday.
