ERIE, PA – Hartwick water polo closed out its CWPA schedule with a pair of victories on Saturday in Erie. The Hawks defeated Mercyhurst 12-7 and Gannon 19-10 to finish the year with a 6-4 mark. The Hawks will await seeding for the upcoming championships which will be announced after next weekend. 'Wick has now won four straight games and improves to 17-18 overall.
In the opener against the Lakers, reigning CWPA Rookie of the Week
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary) scored four goals and
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT) added three in the fourth quarter alone as the Hawks tallied four of the game's final five goals to pull away late.
Polak and
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia) scored goals for the Hawks in the opening period which ended 2-2. After the two teams traded goals to start the second quarter, Polak and
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia) then scored to hand the Hawks a 5-3 lead at halftime.
The margin was increased to four with tallies from
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa) and Tait in the third period. Two straight Laker goals made the score 7-5 with one quarter to play.
The two teams traded goals in the first minute of the fourth with Mihajlovik registering the Hartwick marker. Polak registered her fourth goal of the game and Mihajlovik contributed two more, all within a 3:10 span as the Hawks claimed an 11-6 edge. The Lakers got one back but
Natalie May (Huntington Beach, CA) finished off the scoring with under a minute left for the 12-7 win.
The result of the Hawks' second match was never in doubt as 'Wick darted out to a commanding 8-0 advantage after the first quarter. Polak scored three times in the opening eight minutes with
Blanca Anton Cuesta (Madrid, Spain) and
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand) adding two apiece.
Dendy Young registered all three of the Hartwick goals in the second quarter. The Hawks would take an 11-5 lead into halftime.
Five different players scored for 'Wick in the third as the margin was increased to 16-7. Three different scorers found the net for the Hawks in the fourth to close out the 19-10 victory.
Polak finished the game with five goals for Hartwick with Dendy Young adding four. McKenty scored three and Mihajlovik and Anton Cuesta tallied two each. Brennan,
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa), and
Guia Carlini (Camoglia, Italy) also figured into the scoring column.
Hartwick looks to get to the .500 mark tomorrow in its regular season finale at Moyer Pool. The Hawks host Marist beginning at 3 p.m.
