PROVIDENCE, RI – Hartwick water polo earned a pair of wins on the road on Saturday with a 15-9 victory over Conn College and an 8-7 triumph over Brown in games played at Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, RI. With the wins, the Hawks improve to 15-18 overall. The victory over Brown ups their CWPA mark to 4-4 with two games left next weekend in Erie, PA.
Against Brown, Hartwick did not lead in the game until 1:13 remained in the third quarter. The Hawks would hold a 7-5 edge in the fourth quarter, but two Bear goals tied the match with 3:26 remaining in the game.
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary) would net the game-winner with 1:44 showing on the clock and the Hawks' defense kept the Bears out the rest of the way for the 8-7 win.
Polak finished the game with three goals.
Blanca Anton Cuesta (Madrid, Spain) also tallied three times for 'Wick.
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand) and
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT) each scored once.
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia) registered 12 saves in the goal.
In the first quarter of play, Brown led on three separate occasions and took a 3-2 advantage into the second quarter. Polak notched both of the Hartwick tallies.
After scoring two of the first three goals of the second quarter, the Bears found themselves up by a 5-3 margin. McKenty scored the Hawks' third goal and Anton Cuesta trimmed the gap to 5-4 after 16 minutes. Davies would make five stops in the quarter.
Anton Cuesta tied the score at five 3:02 into the third period and Mihajlovik put the Hawks in front for the first time with 1:13 left.
Anton Cuesta registered her third goal of the game 55 ticks into the fourth period on a penalty shot and the Hawks were ahead 7-5. Brown's Liz Rosen then scored twice in a 55-second span to tie the score at 7-7.
Polak picked up her third of the night with 1:44 left in the game to put the Hawks in the lead for keeps. Brown drew an exclusion with 1:15 left in the match but couldn't cash the extra-man opportunity in and the Hawks denied the Bears over the final minute for the win.
The victory improves Hartwick's all-time record against the Bears to 36-5.
In the Hawks' first game against the Camels of Conn College, McKenty led the way with four goals. She also added two assists.
Kylie Traube (Johannesburg, South Africa) added three goals and two helpers. Mihajlovik,
Lara Dendy Young (Cape Town, South Africa), and Polak each registered two scores.
Rebecca Armstrong (Pasadena, CA) and
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia) added a goal apiece and
Josette Santos (Huntington Beach, CA) made 10 saves in the Hartwick goal.
Hartwick next plays on Saturday, April 11 against Mercyhurst and Gannon in its final two CWPA games of the regular season.
