ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick women's tennis team suffered just its third loss of the season, 7-1 at local rival Oneonta on Tuesday. The Hawks dropped each doubles match and only collected one singles match to put their season mark at 7-3. The Red Dragons improve to 10-3.
No. 2 doubles saw the Hartwick duo of
Kelly Napolitano (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and
Kelli Ryan (Plattsburgh, NY/Seton Catholic) and the Oneonta representatives, Kayla Houle and Kaitlin Ferrara draw, 8-8. As a result, Napolitano and Ryan had to endure their first tiebreaker at doubles. The pair would ultimately drop the tiebreaker, 7-4.
In singles play, the Hawks saw two flights head into tiebreakers.
Top flight player,
Heidi Rice (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman), faced a super tiebreaker in her match. After falling, 6-1, in the first set, the junior rallied for a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the second. In the final set, she would win it to take the singles point, 10-5.
Caitin O'Brien (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) competed in her second consecutive tiebreaker. Houle outplayed O'Brien in the first set, 6-4. O'Brien would even the score in the next set, 6-0. For the last set, Houle would claim the point, 10-5.
Hartwick, which clinched a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 semifinals for the second straight year on Saturday, looks to get back to winning ways this weekend against conference members, Nazareth and Elmira. First, the Hawks will play the Golden Flyers, October 8
