ONEONTA, NY – The No. 10 ranked Hartwick water polo team won three straight on Saturday at Moyer Pool with victories over St. Francis Brooklyn, Mercyhurst, and Brown. The day marked Hartwick Senior Day with
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia/Kirawee HS) and
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia/Harry Kendall HS) being honored prior to the Brown game.
Hartwick improves to 8-3 overall with the results. The Hawks have won eight in a row.
In the opener against the Terriers, the Hawks trailed in the first quarter, 3-2, before settling on a 4-4 tie after eight minutes. Hartwick opened the game up in the second quarter, out-scoring SFBC 7-0. 'Wick maintained its big advantage in the third quarter, leading by eight on three occasions. They out-scored the Terriers in the fourth, 2-1, for the 16-8 final score.
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary/Rudas HS) recorded four goals for the Hawks.
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia/St. Clares College), Tait, and
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand/Takapuna Grammar School) scored three apiece.
Maria Moya (Madrid, Spain/Ortega Y Gasset),
Charlotte Cottle (Blakehurst, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies College
), and
L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic) tallied once each.
In 'Wick's second game of the day, the Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Mercyhurst and led 8-2 after one quarter. Polak scored three times and Tait added two in the period. The Hawks extended their lead to seven, 11-4, after three different goal scorers found the net before halftime.
Polak added two more in the third quarter for a 16-7 advantage.
Sarah Lewis (La Jolla, CA/Cathedral Catholic) registered a hat-trick in the final quarter as the Hawks closed out the 21-9 victory.
Against the Bears, 'Wick grabbed a 5-1 lead in the opening quarter. Polak would tally four times in the period with McKenty adding two and the Hawks led 7-4 heading into the second period.
Brennan scored three times with Tait adding a pair of scores in the second quarter and the Hawks led comfortably at halftime, 13-5. The Bears trimmed their deficit to five twice in the third quarter but Hartwick still led 15-9 after 24 minutes. Brennan added two more in the final period as Hartwick won 18-9.
Brennan would finish with seven goals. Polak scored five and Tait and McKenty each scored three.
Hartwick travels to Cambridge, MA next weekend for three games at the Harvard Invite. The Hawks play Iona and Siena on March 5.
