HAYWARD, CA – Hartwick topped Cal State East Bay on the road by a final of 16-11 on Thursday at Pioneer Pool in Hayward, CA. With the victory, the nineteenth-ranked Hawks improve to 10-5 on the season.
In the first quarter, the Hawks trailed at three different points to the Pioneers, but they managed to pull within one, 4-3.
L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic),
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand/Takapuna Grammar School), and
Natalie May (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison HS) registered the first-quarter tallies for the Hawks.
'Wick surged ahead in the second quarter, out-scoring CSUEB by a 3-0 margin.
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia/St. Clares College) tied the game at 4-4 at 5:06.
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT/Silverthorn Collegiate Inst.) put Hartwick in front at 3:25, and Brennan added an insurance goal with under a minutes left as the Hawks took a 6-4 advantage at halftime.
The two teams traded goals just 10 seconds apart early in the third period with Mihajlovik netting her second of the game for 'Wick.
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary/Rudas HS) then fired in back-to-back tallies 26 seconds apart for a 9-5 Hawk lead.
The Pioneers answered with a goal before Edwards and May each tallied for an 11-6 edge. CSUEB would score at 3:13 but Brennan closed out the scoring in the period with her third goal for a 12-7 lead.
Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia/Harry Kendall HS) extended the advantage to six with a goal 1:02 into the fourth quarter. The Pioneers would use a two-goal run to pull within four, but Tait netted her second of the quarter at the 3:20 mark to make the score 14-9. Both teams scored a pair of goals in the final two and a half minutes for the final 16-11 score line.
Brennan and Tait led Hartwick with three goals and an assist apiece. Mihajlovik also had three scores. May and Edwards each had two goals and one helper with Polak contributing two tallies.
Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia/Kirawee HS) played in goal, registering 11 saves and one steal.
Hartwick had a trio of games tomorrow against Azusa Pacific, Sonoma State, and #6 UC Davis.
