Hartwick Water Polo Stays Unbeaten in CWPA With Sweep of Bucknell and George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 21 Hartwick water polo team upped its CWPA Conference mark to 3-0 on Saturday with victories over Bucknell and George Washington. The Hawks began the day with a 15-10 win over the Bison and closed out the sweep with a 17-11 victory over the host Colonials. With the wins, the Hawks improve to 15-8 on the season heading into the final four games of the regular season next weekend.
          
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary/Rudas HS) accounted for 12 of the Hawks' 30 goals on the day, including eight tallies against the Bison.
          
Bucknell would gain an early 2-0 lead on the Hawks, but 'Wick would out-score the Bison 9-2 the rest of the half for a 9-4 advantage after two quarters. The Bison trimmed the gap to three, 11-8, after three quarters. Hartwick turned the tables in the final quarter scoring four of six goals for the final 15-10 score line.
          
Polak scored in every period, including four times in the second. Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia/Harry Kendall HS) and Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand/Takapuna Grammar School) each scored twice for the Hawks. Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia/St. Clares College), Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT/Silverthorn Collegiate Inst.), and L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic) each added tallies.
          
McKenty also dished out three assists for 'Wick. Brennan, Polak, and Maria Moya (Madrid, Spain/Ortega Y Gasset) each had two. Brennan also grabbed a game-high five steals. Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia/Kirawee) made six saves in goal.
          
Against the Colonials, the Hawks jumped in front 3-0 in the opening three and a half minutes and led 4-2 after the first period. Hartwick led 6-4 in the second before four straight goals helped the Hawks pull away. 'Wick led by as many as eight, 12-4, in the third quarter. The fourth period saw 10 goals by both teams for the final 17-11 outcome.
          
Polak and Brennan led Hartwick with four goals apiece. Edwards contributed three scores. Tait and Mihajlovik each tallied twice for 'Wick with McKenty and Davies also finding the net.
          
Hartwick travels to Princeton next weekend for its final CWPA games of the season. The Hawks play Harvard and Michigan on Saturday, April 16, followed by Princeton and Indiana on Sunday, April 17. The Crimson, Wolverines, Tigers, and Hoosiers all are currently ranked 16 or higher in the country.
