Water Polo Finishes Fourth at CWPA Championship

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Hartwick water polo ended its 2016 season on Sunday in the CWPA third-place game with a 17-10 loss to Princeton University at Blodgett Pool in Cambridge, MA. The Hawks finish the season with a 16-14 mark.
           
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT/Silverthorn Collegiate Inst.) led Hartwick with three goals. Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary/Rudas HS), Brittany Tait (Kariong, Australia/Harry Kendall HS), and L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic HS) netted two apiece.
           
The Tigers grabbed the lead less than a minute into the game and they held onto it for the duration of the contest. Princeton would lead 5-3 after the first quarter and it extended its advantage in the second by out-scoring the Hawks 5-1 for a 10-4 advantage at halftime.
           
Polak would score twice with Mihajlovik and Tait tallying once apiece as the Hawks cut the deficit to four, 12-8, with 2:40 left in the third quarter. The Tigers, however, would net a pair of goals in the final 1:04 to make it a 14-8 game heading into the fourth quarter.
           
Charlotte Cottle (Blakehurst, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies College) would score 17 seconds into the final quarter, but Princeton scored the next two to increase its advantage. Tait scored the final Hartwick goal with two minutes remaining before the Tigers added one more 24 seconds from full time.
           
Polak, who finished the weekend with 10 goals, was named to the CWPA All-Tournament First Team for her performances. She closes the season with 112 tallies and has 174 in her two seasons at Hartwick. With her final goal today, she now is tied for tenth in career goals at 'Wick.
           
Senior goalkeeper Michaela Davies (Cronulla, Australia/Kirawee) made five saves in her final game at Hartwick and was selected to the All-Tournament Second Team. She finishes her career with 1,059 stops. Davies ranks second in Hartwick history in saves and is one of two players to register 1,000 in her career.
           
Tait scored a pair of goals on the day in her final game with the Hawks. She closes her career with 148 tallies and she ranks fifth in the Hartwick record books in exclusions drawn.
