NEWBURGH, NY – After claiming a pair of doubles points, the Hartwick women's tennis team grabbed the top three singles' wins and a sixth flight victory as they defeated Mount Saint Mary College (NY) 6-3, Thursday evening at MSMC Tennis Courts. The Hawks improve to 6-5 on the year while the host fall to an even 5-5.
The duos of
Kelli Ryan (Plattsburgh, NY/Seton Catholic) and
Heidi Rice (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) (8-5), and
Kelly Napolitano (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and
Sofie Brennan (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) (8-2) sacrificed only six points between them at no. 1 and no. 2 doubles, respectively, for the 2-1 advantage heading into singles action.
Ryan at the third flight performed a near sweep of her Knights' opponent, 6-1, 6-0, as she won by the largest margin of the evening for her sixth victory this season.
Napolitano made easy work of her Knights' foe picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Both Rice at the top flight and
Kylie Sullivan (Camden, NY/Camden Senior) competing at the sixth spot endured a tiebreaker before adding to the Hawks win column.
Rice tallied her win behind a 7-5, 7-6 (8-5) score while Sullivan competed in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8, before garnering her victory.
Hartwick gets right back to conference in a must win battle against Houghton, Saturday, October 7 at 1 p.m.
