HOUGHTON, NY – In a match ripe with Empire 8 playoff implications, the Hartwick women's tennis team was edged by one point in the heartbreaking loss to Houghton, 5-4. This match rounded out the Hawks' conference slate as they finish 3-5. They are 6-6 overall. The Highlanders improve to 7-4; 5-3 E8.
Hartwick credited two doubles' victories as the Hawks no. 1 duo,
Kelli Ryan (Plattsburgh, NY/Seton Catholic) and
Heidi Rice (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) earned an 8-7 (8-6) win while 'Wick's no. 2 pair,
Kelly Napolitano (Mt. Sinai, NY/Mt. Sinai) and
Jaclyn LaSita (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) won by an 8-3 score.
Rice at the top flight and Napolitano at the second spot were the only Hawks to snag singles' wins. Rice mirrored a 6-2 score in straight sets while Napolitano battled in three, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3.
Rice and Napolitano finished the league slate having earned a team-best clip going 7-1. LaSita finishes 2-5 while Ryan went 4-2 against E8 opponents.
The Hawks close out their season against local rival Oneonta on Wednesday, October 11 at 3:30 p.m. at Hartwick Courts.
