LA JOLLA, CA – Hartwick water polo finished competition at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational with an 8-7 victory over No. 22 Cal State Northridge and a 10-6 loss to No. 14 Long Beach State on Sunday in La Jolla, CA. The Hawks return home with a record of 6-2.
The Hawks grabbed an early 2-0 lead on the Matadors in their first game following goals from
Charlotte Cottle (Blakehurst, Australia / Presbyterian Ladies College) and
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ONT / Grand River Collegiate Institute) 30 seconds apart. CSUN evened the score at 2-2 after one quarter of play.
A goal from
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT / Silverthorn Collegiate Inst.) 33 seconds into the second quarter would put Hartwick up to stay.
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School #368) and
L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA / Cathedral Catholic HS) both scored goals to increase the lead to two in the quarter before the Hawks settled on a 5-4 advantage at halftime.
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary / Rudas HS) had the only goal of the third period and Mihajlovik tallied early in the fourth to up the margin to three, 7-4. The Matadors scored two in a row with under three minutes to play in the contest. Polak, however, made it a two-goal game again with 2:13 left. CSUN answered 16 seconds later, but it would be the last tally of the game in the 'Wick victory.
In their second game of the day, the Hawks played a dominant first quarter against the 49ers scoring four of the first five goals. Polak and Mihajlovic scored for Hartwick for a 2-0 lead. After a Long Beach tally, Wilson scored at the 3:16 mark and again just before the buzzer for a 4-1 lead.
The 49ers netted the first two goals of the second quarter to pull within one of the Hawks. Kotanchyan scored for Hartwick with under two minutes left and the Hawks took a 5-3 advantage into the half.
The two teams traded goals in the third with
Katie McKenty (Auckland, New Zealand / Takapuna Grammar School) scoring for 'Wick. Long Beach made it a one-goal game at 2:35 and tied the score with 11 seconds left in the quarter.
The 49ers got their first lead of the game 32 seconds into the fourth. They got a two-goal cushion 33 ticks later. They extended their advantage to three with 4:43 remaining and tacked on the game's final goal with 21 seconds to play.
The Hawks are off for nearly two weeks until Saturday, February 25 when they visit Bucknell University for their CWPA Conference opener. Game time is 2 p.m.
