ONEONTA, NY – Eighteenth-ranked Hartwick scored 19 times in its first game and another 17 times in the second on Saturday in two victories at Moyer Pool. The Hawks defeated St. Francis Brooklyn 19-9 and Siena College 17-12. They improve to 10-5 on the season with the wins.
In the Hawks' first game against St. Francis Brooklyn, 11 different players made it into the scoring column and six players had two goals or more.
Six Hawks found the net in the opening eight minutes as Hartwick led 7-3 after one quarter. The Hawks extended the lead with another big quarter as they out-scored the Terriers 5-1 for a 12-4 advantage at the half.
The Hawks added another four tallies in the third quarter and three in the fourth as they out-scored SFB 7-5 in the second half for the 10-goal victory.
Nikolina Mihajlovik (Mississauga, ONT / Silverthorn Collegiate Inst.) paced Hartwick with four goals.
Lauren Brennan (Canberra, Australia / St. Clares College),
L.J. Edwards (Encinitas, CA / Cathedral Catholic HS),
Lena Kotanchyan (Moscow, Russia / Elk Island School #368),
Tori Wilson (Kitchener, ONT / Grand River Collegiate Institute), and
Madison Germuska (Encinitas, CA / La Costa Canyon HS) each had two.
Zsofia Polak (Dunaujvaros, Hungary / Rudas HS),
Charlotte Cottle (Blakehurst, Australia / Presbyterian Ladies College),
Becca Lelles (Boulder City, NV / Boulder City HS),
Maryanna Antoniou (Glyfada, Greece / Second General HS of Glyfada), and
Gina Grauer (West Lawn, PA/Wilson HS) chipped in a goal apiece.
Against the Saints, six players scored in the first quarter, with Antoniou, Lelles, and Wilson each registering two goals, as Hartwick jumped out to a 9-1 lead. Siena would blank the Hawks 3-0 in the second period, however, to pull within five at halftime, 9-4.
Six different players found the net again in the third as the 'Wick lead grew to 15-8 with one quarter remaining. Siena netted five goals in the fourth but 15-11 was as close as the Saints would get.
Antoniou led Hartwick in the game with three goals. Polak, Lelles, Wilson, and
Hannah Erbe Smith (San Diego, CA / Scripps Ranch HS) each contributed a pair of tallies. Brennan, Edwards,
Maria Moya (Madrid, Spain / Ortega Y Gasset),
Natalie May (Huntington Beach, CA / Edison HS),
Sarah Lewis (La Jolla, CA / Cathedral Catholic HS), and Kotanchyan also found the back of the net.
The Hartwick water polo team is off for the next two weeks until Saturday, March 25 when it opens its trip west at defending national champion and top-ranked University of Southern California.
